Building Expertise

Even if you are someone who dabbles in multiple topics, you can still build expertise.

Find HOW from the following threads🧵
1/ If you have multiple interests, it means you are more curious than others.

In fact, I had to go past 200 books to understand my keen interest in (cognitive + behavioral) psychology, neuroscience, and philosophy.

And mind you, I’m an economist by training.

So Have Patience!
2/ If you are still struggling to pick a topic, then choose a topic based on something you already find fascinating and love to learn.

For instance, if your bookshelf is filled with leadership & Development books, then there lies the hint.
3/ Once you find yourself interested in a topic, start by learning fundamental concepts.

Figure out which concepts and ideas are fundamental and the most important ones.

Learn them from the BOOKS.
4/ While learning from the books, please don’t read them from cover to cover. Actually, I made this mistake in my early days.

Instead, go straight to the index section and find out the list of topics that are listed there.
5/ Find out the topic that is covered in depth.

Because if an author is spending a good deal of pages on something,

That means it is ideal to learn those topics from that book.
6/ Once you know the source - understand the basic nuances.

For instance, while learning motivational theories, differentiate b/w content & process theories.

Content theories explain what motivation is, and process theories describe how motivation occurs.
7/ While learning a concept, try to contextualize them in real life.

Look for instances where those learnings could be applied.

In short, don’t shy away from experimenting with your own interpretations.
8/ Take real-life projects or assignments where the interpretations of your understanding could be utilized.

And when you hit a wall, which is inevitable; take it as an opportunity to learn something new.
9/ If you are still interested in going deep

I would recommend this thread 🧵from @ejames_c

About how do people ACTUALLY learn from doing?

10/ But how do you now implement these concepts and figure out which ones work best in your situation?

How do you know what’s effective and what’s not?

One solution to this dilemma is double-loop learning.
11/ We can think of double-loop learning as learning based on Bayesian updating — the modification of goals, rules, or ideas in response to new evidence and experience.

@FarnamStreet has a great primer on this in their article below.

fs.blog/2018/06/double…
12/ And the most frustrating part: even after spending a huge amount of time, you might need a fresh pair of eyes to start seeing what is in front of you, and what exactly you need to unlearn before learning further.
13/ In fact, G.K. Chesterton has managed to put it beautifully, “The things we see every day are the things we never see at all.”

Thanks for reading!

And all the very best in your endeavor to build expertise!

Limitations of an Optimized Mindset
A thread 🧵on the problem of optimization!
1/ Finding an optimal solution through an efficient algorithm is how a trained technologist looks at any computational problem.

But as soon as this mindset is extended to real-world problems, the majority of inefficiencies become annoying.

#solutions #efficiency #productivity
2/ In fact, the real problem starts when everything in life becomes an optimization problem.

So much so that eventually, it becomes a defining orientation to life as well.
