Genius of #Periyar lay in getting a majority of people of TN to identify themselves with what they were not. Normally we identify with who we are by religion/ caste/language etc.Periyar got people to identify themselves as non brahmin, not as who they were, but as who they were not
In no other part of India would you find people referring to themselves as non brahmins. They would always see themselves as being part of their community or social group. In Periyar's days it made sense. Brahmins dominated disproportionately and oppressed other communities
and so the collective angst against them was channelised effectively. Even at that time there were other equally prosperous communities as Brahmins. But as they were socially oppressed by the Brahmins despite their wealth, these privileged classes spearheaded
the Dravidian movement.Over the decades these communities began to dominate others, all in the name of ensuring social justice. And to the truly backward communities they offered crumbs to show that they were true defenders of the non brahmins. Both the Sattanathan and Ambasankar
Backward Classes Commissions set up by TN Govt spoke about some communities garnering the lions share of reservation benefits and said that they should be moved out of the BC list. But by then these castes had become part of the ruling elite and so these recommendations
were ignored. Over the years the 2 tumbler system, honor killings & caste discrimination especially in villages continued to flourish and it was always blamed on "Brahminism" though no Brahmin was involved in these acts. No political party dared to call out any community for this
Castes organized themselves as vote banks and had to be dealt with softly even when some of their members discriminated against other weaker sections. A caste census today will expose the truth about the "social justice" that is being trumpeted. #SocialJusticeDay
The Dravidian movement did end the unjust hegemony of the Brahmin community but it did little thereafter to ensure true social justice which would have been to ensure equal opportunity for all communities. Instead a handful of powerful caste groups replaced Brahmins & have become
the neo brahmins cloaking themselves in the "social justice" mantra. As long as other castes, especially the weaker sections, continue to get sold down the river by their "leaders" or are unable to see how they are being used, real social justice will remain elusive. 9/9

Yesterday I was on 2 Tamil TV debates on 27% #Reservation announced for OBC candidates in UG&PG Medical admissions. What struck me more than claims from panelists that it was their party/movement's efforts that forced Central Govt to announce this, was their take against EWS quota
EWS was passed in Parliament with almost all parties incl.Congress,CPM, BSP,SP,TMC etc. supporting it. Yet in TN most Dravidian parties have a problem with it that no one in the rest of India seems to have.(Like for NEET). Mind you EWS does not touch the existing quotas but still
they oppose it. I supported 27% reservation announcement and said it is likely to reach the needy as creamy layer among OBC wd be excluded and those who need help the most wd get the benefits. I also supported the EWS quota. Then I wondered why only Dravidian parties opposed it.

Welcome announcement of @PKSekarbabu to appoint female priests in temples. This should have been a change brought about by Hindu community itself &not dictated by Government but since this is a reform that is progressive one must welcome it despite fact it is being dictated 1/7
The only constant in the world is change. That applies to religions too.Any religion that is infelxible to societal changes around it is bound to perish. One of the great strengths of Hinduism has been its adaptability to change. Rituals have been modified to suit the norms 2/7
of society&pace of modern life.Practices like Child marriage which were once sanctioned by religion have been abolished. So we need to embrace this change too.Women are already priests in some non agama/village temples.I was told that scriptures do not explicitly3/7

94 crore people need to be immunized in India as of now. So that's 188 crore doses of #CovidVaccine needed. 28 crore doses already made. Around 160 crore doses needed. 25% of this to Private sector is 40 crore. Assume 3/4th of this 25% get #COVISHIELD and 1/4th get #Covaxin
At ₹600 per dose that's a cool ₹18,000 crore for @SerumInstIndia and at 1200 per dose, ₹12000 crore for @BharatBiotech . Pvt.hospitals get to make approx. ₹6000 crore as service charge.Overall cost to public ₹36,000 crore. @adarpoonawalla has said Covishield got him a small
profit at ₹150/dose and Krishna Ella said one dose of Covaxin wd be cheaper than a bottle of mineral water. Taking them at their word had Govt fixed the price of vaccine even at ₹300 per dose, procured them directly and distributed to Pvt sector the 25% doses they said they wd,

An important thread on the #Oxygen situation in Tamil Nadu. This information is obtained after speaking to some of the manufacturers including R.Kannan former President of the AIIGMA.
1.Tamil Nadu+Puducherry daily Oxygen production is usually around 420 Metric Tons. #CovidIndia
(Inox 140 MT, Praxair100 MT, National Oxygen Puducherry 40 MT)are among the large producers of O2 in TN/Py. Others are small manufacturers.
2.This 420 MT includes both Industrial and Medical Oxygen.
3.Right now demand has gone up to around 500-520 MT/day. Shortages hv started
4. Increasing capacity of existing plants can be done in two ways. One by getting them to maximize capacity they can add maybe 5% more. By allowing air separator plants to supply 93% O2 instead of 99% O2 as PSA plants are already allowed, may help them add another 10% capacity.

My take on what the result of the #TamilNaduElections could be. This is based on hundreds of conversations with people across the State including politicians, journalists and public over the last 5 days. The feedback I got is in this thread... #tamilnaduelection2021
1.Chennai:DMK seems headed for a comfortable win. AIADMK will be happy if they get more than 3-4 seats out of the 16.
2. Northern Belt: Vanniar consolidation has happened. Only question is how much. And has there been a counter polarization of other castes against AIADMK-BJP?
Out of the 78 seats in the Vanniar/Northern Belt there is a tight contest with a 50-50 split.
3. Kongu belt is clearly an AIADMK +edge area. They expect to win around 70% of the 58 seats in the region. If they do badly here, game over.
4. Cauvery Delta is a DMK+ win area.
