Pres of the Council of Ministers Italy "The advances we have made are at risk b/c of #COVID19 - #Italy is committed thru @g20org to "rekindle the spirit" that led to the creation of the @GlobalFund" "Sufficient, sustainable and predictable funding needed." HEAR HEAR
@oumajoyce2 speaking now: "I am humbled that Global Fund continues to engage and put us as civil society at the centre of the response - as we celebrate #GlobalFund20 I celebrate the 44 mn lives saved - amazing progress."
@WHO's @DrTedros speaks @ the "front row seat" to the impact of the Fund over the past 20 yrs and the important role it has played in response to #COVID19 & thru @ACTAccelerator - "We remain committed to our partnership for a world free of #HIV#TB & #malaria and #HealthForAll
@PeterASands: there is no middle ground, these are not different fights - its the same #HealthcareWorkers, communities & ppl most at risk from #HIV#TB & #malaria and #COVID19
"Let's turbocharge our response, end the 3 diseases, defeat C19 & prepare for global pandemics to come"
#Tanzania MoH Samia Suluhu Hassan states they are a committed partner b/c have seen the impact of @GlobalFund part on women and girls and "no country is safe until all countries are safe" implores countries to make significant commitments at nxt years replenishment.
@GayleSmith says US sees @GlobalFund as a key partner b/c keeping up the fight against #HIV#TB & #malaria but also leveraging its experience/networks/expertise to fight #C19 which is why "we are delighted to continue to support the Fund...and we're with you to get the job done."
"What is a car guy doing in this event? I am in the business of spreading joy, of dolce vida which leaves us with no other choice than to fight climate change and pandemics...it is vital we participate - we can all drive change, we can all do something." PS Rep from @fiat
@gatesfoundation Gargee Gosh says that "ambition was a founding ingredient of the @GlobalFund" and it has made such important strides b/c its founders "dared to believe that we could. We need that level of ambition today especially in face of this years setbacks."
@PeterASands in order to #leavenoonebehind we need to address and remove barriers to equitable access - human rights, gender legal, economic - to address the pandemics -- "You can never end deadly diseases w/out active engagement & ldshp of those most affected"
speaking now, @GFANAP Rachel Ong - we are the best to speak for ourselves. We wish more institutions could take a lead from @GlobalFund about engagement and inclusion of communities
@GFANAP Sidenote....check out the work of @GFANAP here: gfanasiapacific.org including their work "Distanced but not Disconnected: Stories of Community Resilence, Rights and Responsiveness amidst #COVID19 "
@GFANAP a few minor tech glitches while hearing from @UNAIDS@Winnie_Byanyima - when HIV drugs first came on the market, they cost 10K/year pp and supplies were limited - today high quality #HIV treatment is just 75/year - happened b/c a shift to global generic production ....
..wasn't perfect, but we are not doing this in #COVID19 and for newer #HIV advances such as long-acting trtmts. this would be a #gamechanger b/c it is now undermining our progress. We have the lessons, we know what works we need to increase the momentum for change.
25 yrs for @UNAIDS, #GlobalFund20 - we can leverage our experience. "For me this is a moment of hope because we are together and we know what to do."
Back to Rachel O from @GFANAP : laws, policies and services need to urgently empower those who are left behind - we have to adapt health responses to put #lastmilefirst to put those most affected at the centre
Board Chair @DonaldKaberuka wrapping up: the @GlobalFund partnership over the last 20 yrs has saved lives, economies and nations - but there is much to do given the impact of #COVID19.
As Mandela would have put it "There are many more mountains to climb."
We have come this far tx to our collective resolve; we can beat the 3 diseases. We must rise to the challenge to ensure the @GlobalFund is fully resources to do its work. - Kaberuka
Host - "We see what can be achieved when the world comes together in solidarity - changing the story for millions around the world."
Thanks all who have been following and congratulations to all the speakers particularly @GFANAP Rachel Ong and @oumajoyce2 for keeping communities voices at the centre of the discussion. And congratulations to @GlobalFund for this event- together we can change the story.
#TB is front and center, because it was worst hit by #COVID19. Resources in pulmonary health diverted from TB towards Covid19 – doctors, beds, GeneXpert machines and cartridges – on top of everything else.
🧵
#HIV was impacted too, especially #prevention and #testing. #Malaria fared better, probably in part because countries with endemic malaria were hit by #COVID19 latter, though testing did drop.
