@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams As anyone who has been following this knows, there are some serious erosion problems with the #SiteC river diversion tunnel outlets. BC Hydro has been fluctuating the river a lot to accommodate the repairs - & locals have noticed that. Recall from March
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams ..Relevant section on the tunnel problem from today's #SiteC report: work "involves re-mediation [sic] of two areas where the shotcrete has detached exposing the underlying rock surface in order to mitigate deterioration of the exposed rock surface and remaining shotcrete"
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams NOTE: There is no "rock" at #SiteC. Shotcrete (sprayed-on concrete) would not be detaching from rock. It's detaching from unstable shale that turns to mud when water seeps into it. Problem with shale that's hard when dry but soft when wet is... dams involve quite a lot of water.
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams In short, it's been a whole year since river diversion for #SiteC, the diversion tunnels are still falling apart, and the work to repair them is now being called "high-risk" by BC Hydro itself. #bcpoli
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams More bad news in the #SiteC quarterly report. But first: $7.4 billion has been spent to date. Current budget is $16 bn but Horgan won't cap that & report suggests serious & $$$ problems making $20+bn more likely. Still more than $10B to be saved if we stop #SiteC now, & we could.
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams Problems & issues listed in the report: 1. In the "blaming FNs" category:
"..the possibility that the Blueberry River decision affects the timing of the issuance of provincial permits required for the completion of the #SiteC Project." Recall: cbc.ca/news/canada/br…#bcpoli
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams [Blueberry River FN unsurprisingly won their cumulative impacts on Treaty 8 case, which included the brutal effects of the Peace River dams incl #SiteC on their treaty rights, livelihoods & way of life. Their win also lends weight to upcoming West Moberly FN case vs. #SiteC]
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams ..2. "..heavy rainfall events which necessitated reconditioning & retesting of materials." A construction expert tells us this is re: placement of glacial till for the earthfill dam. 'It's a fussy material to deal with, tight margin between turning to dust/too muddy to work with"
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams .."Moisture/density is extremely important with this material" our construction expert says, and he has dealt with this glacial till himself. #SiteC Report: "Contractor unable to keep up with the number of tests required by the technical specifications." #bcpoli
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams Note that there have been many problems not just with the geology at #SiteC but with procuring materials for the bed & interior of the earthfill dam - it's as if BCH gambled on finding the right materials nearby and lost. We know some sources they bargained on didn't pan out.
@BCUtilitiesCom@resistmegadams ..3. A "quality stop" ( BC Hydro's wording) was issued by BC Hydro to the Main Civil Works contractor due to the heat dome event to address concerns regarding specified temperature and wetness of concrete. They seem to be having a lot of trouble with materials at #SiteC.
This is that time in the election when we have smaller parties (& their members) railing against "strategic voting." This is in their self-interest, of course. But it makes the electorate materially stupider about how the First Pasts the Post electoral system works. #argh#elxn44
Under First Past the Post, all voting is really "strategic voting" unless your favourite party is leading in your riding. It's baked in. People seem to intuitively know this (eg voting to keep the Conservatives out) but they don't seem to get that this only happens under FPTP...
What bugs me is it's smaller parties (who BTW remain smaller precisely due to FPTP) who when we're not in elections often push for #ProportionalRepresentation (where strategic voting doesn't apply) but who, during FPTP elxns, confuse ppl by telling them not to vote strategically
In court, the logging company's lawyer said of the land defenders, 'their resistance to being arrested is just shocking!' (This generated some amusement)
Leaving aside what "resistance" means for now, let's just review what's been going on with the RCMP at #FairyCreek...
Recall: the RCMP not only used this injunction to remove forest defenders from the #FairyCreek area, they exceeded their powers, & barred media from witnessing their actions, & more. In August, Judge Thompson (same judge as today) found that: cbc.ca/news/canada/br…#bcpoli
Yesterday we heard harrowing stories of RCMP violence from Wet'suwet'en matriarch Marlene Hale who's been at #FairyCreek supporting Pacheedaht Elder Bill Jones. See photo? Says police impregnate gloves w/ a sedative, force it over defenders' faces & drag them out @mikefarnworthbc
@mikefarnworthbc We heard about arrestees kept in overheated vans meant to carry fewer prisoners, hands tied & finally driven at breakneck speeds over logging roads until passengers throw up. Of the "green men" (RCMP tactical?) whose name badges are obscured by disallowed thin blue line badges
The land defenders' do not resist, so the fact so many are injured by police, esp by the "green men" who seem to have the job of roughing them up, is proof this violence is deliberate. Teal Jones wants access to the massive ancient trees now, & RCMP will harm kids to help them.
THREAD. This 17-year-old was removed from a tripod at Ada’itsx/#FairyCreek on Aug 24. An RCMP officer cut the youth’s shirt off, covered his face with a gloved hand & held his head back at an uncomfortable angle, before dropping him down with a rope around his lower ribs. #bcpoli
THREAD - Report from #FairyCreekBlockade that you won't hear in the BC mainstream media, on the imminent cutting of these ancient trees, incl 1000 year old giants.
The RCMP are acting as heavies for the logging company Teal Jones which has been posting... record profits. #bcpoli
.."This tree is in the next block to be logged at #FairyCreek starting tmrw. It's just outside the watershed. Police cleared the route to it by smashing in the windows of a van so they could drag a woman who had been sleeping in the van out, then crushed her van with a bulldozer"
.."Did we get pictures? No, we are no longer allowed to take pictures, on pain of arrest, and the media were excluded by an illegal exclusion zone. The one BC Supreme Court Justice Justice Thompson said this about: #bcpoli#FairyCreek#oldgrowth@BCRCMP@mikefarnworthbc@Dave_Eby
Tip: mistrust anyone mentioning surface hygiene, handwashing, sanitization stations. There is no evidence for fomite transmission - at all. Someone tell Dr. Henry.
Mistrust anyone not centering masks and ventilation.
