This session was arranged by Sneh NGO. They work with underprivileged families. Prevention, early detection and treatment of mal-nutrition is a large part of their work.
About 120 parents participated in the session. 20 min of talk and 40min Q&A.
Our aim was to sensitize parents to mental health issues early on in child's life and give them practical, usable and scientifically sound tips.
Background of participants - all in their 20s, some in early 30s. 1or 2 child families, single room residence. Electricity, water and toilet at a premium.

some parents leave their children alone at home and go to work. Neighbors keep an eye on such kids.

no playground.
i spent few minutes on getting ALL kids immunized at local govt dispensary where ALL vaccines of national program are available for free.
Diarrhea, respiratory and brain infections impact brain growth and in turn mental health. So vaccines are important part of mental health.
All parents spend money on food for children. Homecooked, wholesome food is key. buying crispy and spicy junk is waste of money. Protein rich snacks are part of health as malnutrition directly affects intelligence and brain development. Good food equals better mental health.
Time is most important ingredient in parenting.
We discussed ways to spend available time in more meaningful way -
body massage with oil for infants, singing songs with them, including them in house work, talking and listening to them during work is important.
Some mothers also talked about doing exercise with kids as connecting time and healthy activity.
Strengthening parent-child bond is the best way to protect mental ill health.
Reading stories together is a lovely activity.
Child sitting in parent's lap, book in front of them and parents running a finger along the word as they read and enact story has huge value in increasing reading skills, vocabulary and language skills.
many mothers agreed to learn English and math with kids as up-skilling activity.

Parents as role models was our theme. Kids watch them all the time and imitate them. This imitation is a compliment to parents' love and a responsibility.
Modulating our language, tone, relationships, problem solving behavior helps children learn emotional and social skills. a bulwark against mental illhealth.
In the end we came to the conclusion that mental health is important part of happiness and success. It is a skill that is best learnt in family. Parents can help kids and each other in many ways that do not need extra money.

My yearly rant about Gandhigiri as I understand it -
1. It is not about giving roses to people running red lights.
2. One must have a clear ethical stand to defend.
3. Opposing party is seen as misinformed or wrongly motivated.
4. Method is -
a. talks to understand each other's
position.
b. Appraising them about injustice, harm and suffering caused by their actions
c. Highlighting moral, human and legal wrongness of their actions
d. Providing solutions and co-operation in implementing those solutions. Looking for a win-win
5. If this fails - satyagraha
i.e. non violent opposition to unjust rules. Not causing suffering to others or the uninvolved. No collateral damage.
6. Pushing opposition in a corner with gradual escalation techniques to shame them.
7. If they resort to violence - bear that violence at the cost of own life

"people don't quit a job, they quit a boss".
By similar extension can we say - " children don't hate studies, they are turned off by teachers/curriculum/exams, etc."?

Though there is some truth in both statements, they are not entirely true.

In my clinic, I meet such bored, de-motivated, sad and sometimes very angry children everyday.
While some criticism about teaching methods, schools, curricula, etc. is valid, I am not going there..

My focus is on the change-able part that is under my control.
What can I do as a parent to help my child?
I can fill the deficiencies in present system for my child.
Some actionable points -
1. Be physically present with the child when they are studying. Sitting at the table with them, catching up on your reading helps. Use same medium as

What is sold, bought and invested (by VCs) in as Ed-Tech in India is just exam-tech.

#Thread
Lectures (supported by multimedia) about curriculum topics delivered via internet on a custom locked internet access device (e.g. a tablet) is presently called Ed-Tech in India.
Such companies get massive valuations as well.
To make it sound real they throw in discussion forums. This may help kids pass our pathetic MCQ exams with average marks.
But this is no education.

After a few months break, I did a home visit again.
This is my favourite part of work. Visiting a child in their home for assessment/consultation/intervention is one of the most rewarding part of my work as a child psychiatrist in India.
Read on..
Possibility of violence and self neglect are two commonest causes of home visit in my work.

I have been called to talk a child out of locked rooms, toilets, homes, etc. Sometimes I succeed.
What I see in clinic is a sanitized, made up version of family.

Even a planned home visit lets me into their real world and gives wealth of useful clinical information that can help the child and family.
