Some people seem confused about the difference between progressives and conservatives. Here's an example that might help. Take education. There are those who see education as an investment in the future. Public education has a number of benefits to a society;
1/12
1) Prepares children to become good citizens, with broad understanding of a wide range of things, critical thinking skills, the ability to co-operate, negotiate, and generally get along with others, 2) Provides a baseline of knowledge and skills that are essential for life. 2/12
3) Closes the gap between the wealthy & the poor by ensuring children from poorer families obtain the same education as those from wealthier families. 4) Lays the groundwork for the next generation of professionals/tradespeople/citizens by including all rather than the few. 3/12
And many would argue that post secondary education should be freely available to all those who have the aspirations and ambitions to undertake a program of study.
Progessives see high quality education for all as a critical investment in our society. 4/12
Now, there are other people (these would be the conservatives) who see education as a budget line that can be cut so they can please their electorate by lowering taxes or balancing a budget. 5/12
And there are some, with more extreme views, who see education as a revenue stream that has been inadequately tapped, and these seek to ensure that parents must pay user fees to companies to get their children even a grade-school education. 6/12
Creating a more just and equal society is not a goal for them, so having the children of those who cannot afford tuition attend schools with substandard facilities and bad curriculum is ok. They feel these kids don't deserve better anyway. 7/12
There are also some in this camp who see education as a way to ensure children grow up to fit their vision of an ideal citizen. Without critical thinking skills, without the skills required to question authority, & with all but the elite trained up early to do manual labour. 8/12
Two quite different worldviews. One is based on creating a paradigm wherein everyone has the opportunity to achieve their potential, including those who need extra supports along the way. 9/12
The other is based on profit and cost, maximizing the former and minimizing the latter. The actual people in the equation are of very limited importance. Indeed, a well-educated population may even be seen as troublesome and hard to manage. 10/12
There is very little incentive in the conservative view to spend more supporting kids who need anything outside the low-cost assembly-line approach. There seems to be a view that these children will not turn out to be profit-generating employees anyway. 11/12
What's that phrase? Oh, yes, "lower human capital". The progressive view sees inherent value in people, the conservative view sees people as inputs to the profit machine, w/ the real value being in money. So, there you go. (Yes, I am cynical. I've been watching a long time) 12/12

This doesn't work! Developers are in the business of making profit. They do not build housing altruistically. So, in this scheme, where are they getting their profits? 1/
Will there be an Ooops! when the houses are done and no one who needs "affordable" housing can afford it? Will the developers be compensated with carte blanche on other, profitable, ventures? 2/
There has to be profit or there is zero motivation for developers to have anything to do with this. 3/
Has anyone noticed the difference in outrage between a white male hockey player being sexually assaulted and any woman of any ethnicity being sexually assaulted? Why is it deemed so much worse? Serious question. #MeToo 1/7
Why is it no one is asking why it took 11 years for this to come out? If a woman reports a sexual assault several years after the fact, everyone questions the legitimacy of her claim. "Why did she wait so long? Why is she coming forward now?" 2/7
What the vodeo coach did was reprehensible, I am not saying it isn't. But how many sexual assault cases can you think of where there was such a wide net cast for anyone who even knew about it, where the victim was a woman? 3/7
One day my 80+ Dad showed up at my house & said, "I am not comfortable driving anymore. Here's my car. You can drive me from now on" and I did. Awhile later he said "I have been paying bills all my life, I'm tired of it. Here's my POA. You look after all that now." And I did. 1/8
It was simple. He just wanted someone else to take on the chores of life to let him enjoy his last years and I was happy to do it. I loved him and wanted him to be happy. It was no burden. 2/8
Seeing my husband debate POA with his siblings and their father, I am so grateful my Dad was proactive. He trusted me, and was happy to relinquish control. It made life so much easier for everyone. 3/8
If you own anything, make sure you have a will. And then make sure you have named a power of attorney who you trust to look after your best interests should anything untoward happen to you. You are not too young to worry about it unless you are a minor. 1/
Currently witnessing my husband's siblings wrangling POA and Executor functions regarding their parents. Set it up while you have all your faculties. Especially if you have young children or dependents. An accident could be catastrophic for more than just you. 2/
89 year old father-in-law about to have heart surgery. Mother-in-law has advanced dementia. No POA at the moment. Considerable debate. Just get over your horror of thinking of your own mortality and make sure the legal framework is in place to look after yourself/dependents. 3/
So, aside from the fact that it makes it look like Albertans are a bunch of mean-spirited, cruel, greedy tight-wads, what does this mean? 2/15
Well, the conservatives have been chomping at the bit for quite a number of years now to open the constitution and hack out the bits they don't like. 3/15
Re: what happened today w/ the PM and Chief Rosanne Casimir. Does the chief feel her people would do better with a CPC government? Because objectively, they would not. I'm really not sure what the game is here. Perfection is rare in any situation, but kicking the best thing 1/12
That has come along in 200 years suggests reconciliation really isn't the goal. Sorry, I'm just a settler. But I don't get what is going on here. We all have to sometimes take the best, not the ultimate perfect option, as we go through life. 2/12
It's not just Th'emlups te Secwepemc. It's JWR, it's other band councils across Canada. It's Cindy Blackstock, as much as I admire her work for Indigenous children. I do not understand why some Indigenous people & groups seem to be trying to undermine the current government. 3/12
