NEWS: Developers donated at least $58,499 to Edmonton’s incoming city councillors ahead of the election. Three councillors were also part of an infill development lobbyist group.

I analyzed all the public donor lists & this is what I found. #yeg #yegcc edmontonjournal.com/news/local-new…
Development executives, donating as individuals, gave the most to:

- Tim Cartmell ($22,450)
- Andrew Knack ($14,400)
- Ashley Salvador ($14,039)
- Anne Stevenson ($6,610)

Sarah Hamilton, Aaron Paquette, Jennifer Rice & Karen Principe haven’t shared their lists. #yeg #yegcc
Experts I spoke to say developers have a vested interest in the outcome of Edmonton’s elections.

“You do not contribute to every mayoral candidate at the maximum if you don’t expect to be considered in discussions” - Judith Garber, U of A

#yeg #yegcc
I looked for other types of contributions too — I found union & tech industry donors.

Michael Janz had the most from union folks: $1,250 to $5,241. Also multiple donations from NDP current/former members.

Keren Tang had at least $11,003 from tech leaders #yeg #yegcc
Three councillors are listed on the Infill Development in Edmonton Association (IDEA) website as members: Ashley Salvador, Anne Stevenson & Karen Principe.

All say they’re no longer active.

IDEA has lobbied the city on bylaw changes & was active in the election. #yeg #yegcc
Finally, Lori Waughtal made this awesome graphic including all the big names I found for Saturday’s Insight section (and located at the bottom of the online story).

There’s a lot more. Read the story here: edmontonjournal.com/news/local-new…

Oh and one more thing. I made a spreadsheet with all of my findings if you are a data nerd and want to check this searchable list of all the #yeg councillors’ donor lists out after you’re done reading: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
Edmonton doesn’t have a lobbyist registry & councillors don’t have to tell the public about conflicts of interest. That’s done internally.

Don Iveson had a lobbyist registry he published voluntarily. Councillors mulled over doing their own but voted it down in 2019

Premier Jason Kenney is here at the federal building to give an update on Covid today. I’m told Hinshaw came by earlier but she’s not in the room now. #abhealth #covid19ab #ableg #yeg
Kenney says it doesn’t look like we had a Thanksgiving spike. He’s talking a bit about vaccines — we’re at 87.2% of first doses and 80.6% who had both.
He says while it’s important for everyone to get the jab some more vulnerable groups need them more so that’s why they went first and got booster shots.

Heard about a young person who got covid but seems his family are conspiracy theorists. Mum treated him at home with ivermectin, vitamins & home remedies but symptoms wouldn’t let up. She brought him to hospital & now he’s in ICU. Misinformation is killing people 😢
Really sad to see lives threatened because of grifters peddling (and sometimes profiting from) false info on social media.

Easy to be misled when the people you trust are promoting bad info, and telling you not to trust legit sources. I get that.

This is all really sad.
If you've had a change of heart after seeing covid hurting yourself or someone you love, please get in touch. I'd like to hear your story. My DMs are open.

Word is Tim Uppal is about to arrive and speak to his team. Excitement building here. #elxn44 #cdnpoli #yeg
They’ve brought in a truck and Conservative Tim Uppal going to be standing in the back of the truck to give a speech to supporters about his win in Edmonton Mill Woods shortly. #yeg #elxn44 #cdnpoli Image
The crowd has more than doubled at this point — I count more than 100 people here now.

I’m at Conservative Tim Uppal’s campaign party here outside his office by Best Buy on Tamerack Way. Tim isn’t here yet but there a lively crowd here anticipating his arrival and following along with the election results. @edmontonjournal #elxn44 #cdnpoli #yeg
Still too close to call, but Uppal is leading over city councillor Ben Henderson. #elxn44 #yeg #cdnpoli edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/…

I’m at Churchill Square outside #yeg city hall where there’s a crowd growing here for a rally demanding action and to protect Muslim women after two sisters were attacked in St. Albert on Wednesday.
Here’s a look at the scene
A bunch of people here with signs saying things like “stronger social media laws,” “policy change now,” “gov’t act now,” “end anti-Muslim hate,” “stop islamophobia,” “criminalize anti Muslim hate,” and “criminalize hate crimes now. Your words don’t protect us” #yeg

I convinced one of my best friends to get her COVID-19 vaccine, and I’m so happy! I found out why she was hesitant, and worked to help alleviate her specific worries and sent her some reliable, good info.
People have different reasons for being skeptical or hesitant about vaccines. I asked and listened to her to find out why, and she listened to me because we have a good relationship and care about each other.
Reach out to the people in your life who haven’t been vaccinated and find out why. Ask questions with patience and empathy. Vaccines have become political and there are a lot of strong emotions, fears, and often valid skepticism and mistrust.
