#Libya According to what @repubblica has reconstructed, the warship 'San Giorgio' arrived in #Tripoli for a very 'special mission'. The @ItalianNavy has delivered the container-based maritime rescue coordination centre #MRCC via @ItaMilRadar
repubblica.it/esteri/2021/12…
The container-based #MRCC has been equipped by the Italian company #ELMAN with radios & AIS + integrated with NAVTEX & Inmarsat systems that will 'empower' the Libyan coastguard to intercept migrant boats at sea & redirect them back. elmansrl.com/mrcc-libya/
#Libya The @EU_Commission is financing the 'upgrade'. It includes the provision of new patrol boats & the establishment of a radar-supported surveillance network for the Libyan coast. europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document…

ImageImage

#Italy's former interior minister Matteo Salvini praised the ship Caprera after it stopped ++ than 7,000 people from reaching Europe.

There was just one problem: the #Caprera was itself smuggling contraband to #Europe. Image
A key piece of evidence for investigators are photos from a farewell party... Photographs shared on the ship’s WhatsApp group showed a grinning Mr. Corbisiero sitting before a large chocolate cake... Behind him were several sacks of contraband cigarettes. ImageImage

#Libya In 2018, when I first met James, he had survived a Mediterranean shipwreck, been shot & spent years being abused & tortured. Two years later, I met him again.

📹James' journey back to #Nigeria & the harsh reality of return ImageImageImageImage
James was one of ~81,000 migrants returned home by @UNmigration sponsored by @EU_Commission.

What about people retuned to #Sudan?

Mohi, after 3 years in #Libya, returned to #Darfur. Once back, his package never materialised.

Only 766 out of +2,600 have received economic aid. Image
More about returns from #Libya

Sandrine, Rachel & Berline, from #Cameroon, agreed to go back to #Yaounde in 2018.

When I met them moments before boarding a flight in #Misrata airport, they had no idea where they would sleep when they returned to Cameroon. Image

#Libya #Tripoli @UNHCRLibya + @IOM_Libya offered medical aid/food at disembarkation. After some pics, people were transferred to militia groups. They simply disappeared in a well-organized & over-documented system of human rights abuses.

What happens after disembarkation? ImageImage
#Libya Survivors were forcibly brought a location in #Tripoli controlled by a #GNA affiliated armed group. They are now at risk of human trafficking & extortion. No food/medical care. No access of @IOM_Libya & @UNHCRLibya.

The cycle of abuses continues, sponsored by EU + IT. Image
