We have recently been approached for advice on raising safeguarding concerns about individuals. The best way to raise concerns is always by following procedures. Presently there are a lot of concerns about frameworks failing & concerns being ignored, resulting in #whistleblowing
Obviously it is best if concerns about individuals & policies are raised direct with their organisation & are immediately dealt with. Widespread failures to deal with concerns have resulted in people taking to social media. We are preparing a new guide to assist, until then…
This is a good read. It is aimed at schools but there are lessons here for all individuals & organisations on raising, dealing with & recording concerns. Everybody must be free to raise concerns, no matter how small. Those concerns must be taken seriously & recorded.
Remember you don’t need to be certain before you speak up. If you have a concern then you pass it up the line. It is not for individuals to decide whether or not a suspicion or claim is true; especially based on personal relationships; all instances must be taken seriously.
Organisations also have a duty of care to those that concerns have been raised about. Concerns must be recorded, but the confidentiality of all must be respected. Both of those raising concerns & those that the concerns are about.
If someone raises a concern that you are unsure how to respond to, seek help from outside agencies, again respecting the confidentiality of those raising concerns & sharing who the concerns are about on a need to know basis. This is useful. bit.ly/2AOCxLb@NCVO
Ultimately the best way to safeguard against having concerns raised about individuals within your organisation is to apply safer recruitment principles. It is easier to prevent unsuitable individuals from entering your organisation, than to remove once they are there.
The best way to prevent unsuitable individuals entering your organisation is obtaining up to date references; values based interviewing & being incredibly clear that inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated in your organisation & that concerns will always be taken seriously

THREAD Welcome to our new followers. Thank you for joining us on our mission to uphold #safeguarding & ensure all children grow up safe from maltreatment in the best possible circumstances so they may have a successful outcome in life. This is who we are: safeschoolsallianceuk.net/who-we-are/
If you have any questions, look here. We receive no public money, all work & research is completed by volunteers. The only money we have is donations from the public which we are grateful for, these are spent on the website, resources & attending events. safeschoolsallianceuk.net/frequently-ask…
“ If you are a child being sexually abused/raped then how on earth do you process trying to answer these questions?”
“How do you answer whether you have had sexual intercourse? Do they mean what is happening to you? Do you lie even though you have been taught to tell the truth? Will you be in trouble? Will anyone find out?”
Really disappointed to see you supporting homophobia & misogyny @clarebalding Did you check these resources before promoting? They undermine #safeguarding, misrepresent the law & deny same sex attraction.
1. Children questioning whether they are trans need shielding from content on @CBBC & Childline, a mother has said…
Both the @BBC & the @NSPCC, which runs Childline, have come in for criticism for providing a one-sided view of transitioning.” #LGBT telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/06/2…
2. We have reviewed the guidance provided by @NSPCC (lesson resources and guidelines) and @childline (guidance on their website). We have concerns with the content they have produced. See our report here: safeschoolsallianceuk.net/resources-2/fa…
3. Let’s look at all the ways their resources breach @educationgovuk This thread includes examples and is not exhaustive. Read the full guide for a thorough analysis.
Irresponsible attitude towards suicide. Imagine being a teen just realising you are same sex attracted & being told this means you may kill yourself? Or being told being black means you may kill yourself? Where are the @samaritans? #RainbowDay#DiverseEd
More misrepresentations of the law and undermining of #safeguarding from @justlikeus for #SchoolDiversity week. Advising hiding of child’s sex & mixed sex facilities, leaving schools open to legal action.
