In November, we saw nearly 500 EMS opioid-related calls in Edmonton alone. A post on the #ethics of #opioidpoisoning and #harmreduction from Dr. Cheryl Mack
This week the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta will be hearing a critical case dealing with supervised consumption sites. The case is about regulations that this provincial government has enacted that create barriers to receiving services in safer, supervised environments.
While we wait for the courts to assess the legality of these barriers; the ethics of these barriers is already clear. The time is now to reduce barriers to supervised consumption sites.
Mischaracterizing those calling for more harm ⬇️ services as facilitating deadly addictions is wrong and polarizing...oversimplifies the crisis as a single issue of addiction when the driver of this wave of the epidemic is a toxic supply of illicitly produced synth opioids
Mischaracterizing harm reduction fails to look at growing evidence suppt harm prevention through supervised consumption sites, safer supply, decrim of small vol drug possession, and access to drug checking kits allowing those who use drugs to test their supply for contamination
Public health ethics calls on us to do much better. We cannot continue to allow preventable drug poisonings to occur. We need access to the tools that will save lives.

An #opioidpoisoning and #harmreduction thread from Dr. Stan Houston:
In my job as an Infectious Disease and HIV doctor I have been involved in the development of Harm Reduction programs in Edmonton since the early 1990’s
Back in the 90s when HIV was still a pretty new problem and effective treatment was very new, the Alberta government took the enlightened decision to provide HIV treatment to all Albertans who needed it.
Our patients are hardly ever dying of HIV or hepatitis C these days. But all those advances in prevention and treatment are now being wiped out by opiate poisoning deaths.

Removal of #COVID19AB public health measures and discontinuing testing sites

Like you, we wish the pandemic would end but despite statements by @shandro and @CMOH_Alberta we are still in the midst of it.

Letter here:

- new #COVID19AB cases doubling every week
- delta variant 1,000x transmissible than alpha variant
-660,000 under age 12 and 1.5M over 12 in AB are not vaccinated
- we are similar to Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana & Missouri where unvaccinated (average age in 40s) are filling ICUs
-children at risk of COVID-19 pneumonia & Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children
-Arkansas & Oklahoma overwhelmed pediatric ICUs
-AB 47 pediatric ICU beds currently at 100% capacity
-AB unvaccinated children & no public health measures = risk overwhelming pediatric system

🚨Why doctors leaving Alberta?
🚨Why doctors stopping services?
🚨Why doctors fighting with @GoAHealth?

Please see updated section for facility based health services. We compared our analysis to AMA info. The change in total $ fee range is the same; however, within each fee code there are sub-category fees. The % change varies in the sub-categories. ImageImageImageImage
