The researchers analyzed samples from BA.1 (Omicron) convalescent patients with different constellations of prior #SARS2 immunity regarding vaccination & previous infection with a non-Omicron variant & determined titers of NAbs against diff VOCs 1/
What did they find?
1-For vaccinated individuals, high NAb titers against all variants after BA.1 breakthrough infection & also for individuals after infection with a pre-omicron variant followed by BA.1 infection. 2/
2-In contrast, samples from naive unvaccinated individuals after BA.1 infection mainly contained NAbs against BA.1 but only occasionally against the other variants. 3/
Conclusion:
Omicron variant a distinct new serotype. Therefore, unvaccinated individuals, infected with the Omicron only might not be protected well against infection by other SARS2 variants. Consequently, they should be vaccinated for full protection 4/
The rise of #SARS2 variants & evidence of immunological interference (like OAS & weakened T-cell immunity) underscore the need for preemptive, next-gen vaccines that confer broad protection ag Covid
What is common between Denmark, Israel, Austria, France, Switzerland, the UK, and the US? They all suffered an unprecedented severe wave of Omicron despite having some of the highest vaccination rates in the world. 2/ @1amnerd@thewire_in
@1amnerd@thewire_in Most of the Covid19 vaccines are based on spike-protein of SARS2. They have worked reasonably well so far. However, with the advent of #Omicron, one of the most mutated variants has exposed the limitations of these vaccines, particularly their ability to prevent infections 3/
Why did triple vaxxed #Israel recently purchase enough @Novavax vaccine shots to jab their entire population?
Because this is the one vaccine that holds promise to work ag diff future variants!
But, this is a mystery why one of the best Covid vax is still sitting on bench!
1/
Just sharing few key points of a great analysis of this vaccine by @michaelzlin
A recent study by Novavax suggests it may be able to provide broader protection across variants than other vaccines so far. That is a great news, if true! 2/
Besides a potentially broader antibody response, Novavax has the advantage of being stable in the refrigerator, so should be easier to distribute as well
3/
2-Both Omicron & Delta replicate similarly in nasal cell cultures
3-However, in airway cells high in TMPRSS2 there was significant impairment for Omicron. 1/
4-Omicron has altered preference for cell entry towards a TMPRSS2 *independent* pathway that involves engulfing of virus by endocytosis rather than fusion of the virus with the cell directly (TMPRSS2 *dependent*). 2/
5-Consistent with impaired use of #TMPRSS2, the Omicron spike was inefficiently cleaved
This came as a surprise because Omicron has 3 mutations around the polybasic cleavage site (S1/S2). 3/
Results of 37,877 PCR tests on samples collected in Connecticut over two weeks in mid-December 2021, when Delta & Omicron each made up about 50% of COVID-19 cases in the area. 1/
Infected people who either were unvaccinated or had received only 1 dose of a vaccine were more likely to have Delta than Omicron. 2/
But infected people who had received 2 vaccine doses had almost 2 times higher odds of having Omicron than Delta, and those who had received 3 doses had 3 times higher odds of having Omicron. 3/
It’s a delusion to think mass spread of Omicron will end the pandemic
The idea that herd immunity from widespread Omicron infection will last longer than a few months is a mass delusion propagating in all forms of media. 1/
It’s the type of delusion sure to gain traction in a world where we are all absolutely sick and tired of the pandemic. It even ignores reality from three months ago, when Omicron didn’t exist and the idea of us benefitting from infecting everyone was a widely condemned idea. 2/
The reality is we are causing COVID-19 to mutate on a scale never seen before. By allowing the virus to infect much of the world, we are generating trillions upon trillions of viruses. 3/
