NEW—White-tailed deer on NY Staten Island have been found carrying the #Omicron variant—marking the first time Omicron has been reported in wild animals. The results intensify concerns that deer could become a reservoir & a potential source of new variants nytimes.com/2022/02/07/hea…
2) The researchers also found that one deer with Omicron already had a high level of antibodies, suggesting that it may have been previously infected. If #Omicron is similarly immune-evasive in deer, animals infected during earlier outbreaks may be vulnerable to reinfection.
3) “longer-term, widespread circulation of the virus in deer would give the virus more opportunity to mutate, potentially giving rise to new variants that could spill over into people. “The circulation of the virus in deer provides opportunities for it to adapt and evolve,”
4) Between mid-December and the end of January, the field workers collected blood samples from 131 captured deer, as well as nasal and tonsillar swabs (throat swabs!! 👀) from a smaller subset of animals.
5) Nearly 15 percent of the deer had antibodies to the virus in their blood, the researchers found, suggesting that the animals had previously been infected with it.
6) The P.C.R. tests also revealed that viral samples from all seven deer had a pattern of mutations that was suggestive of the Omicron variant.
7) more worrisome than Omicron… there are now reservoirs of completely unidentified variants circulating in NYC sewers… that are evasive against MABs and are high binding to rats 🐀- and NYC sure has millions of rats.
8) But if the findings hold up, and deer can be repeatedly reinfected by new variants, it raises the risk that the animals could become a reservoir for the virus, the scientists said.
9) “You can imagine this could be a never-ending, perpetual cycle of deer constantly circulating the virus among themselves and picking up the new variants,” said Suresh Kuchipudi, a veterinary microbiologist at Penn State who led the research team.
10) “How humans are spreading the virus to deer remains unknown. People could spread the virus to the animals directly — perhaps by hand-feeding deer in parks or yards, the researchers noted — or indirectly, through wastewater or contaminated trash.”
11) Talking the risk of variants isn’t fearmongering. It’s the precautionary thing - and being prepared for sources of new variant is critical. Knowing is half the battle.
12) If people wonder how deer can easily get infected with #SARSCoV2, this video shows how much their exhaled breath stays suspended in the air when simply breathing or snorting. Reminder— you do that too when you’re at a concert / stadium.

⚠️SUB-VARIANT SURGING—Omicron 2.0 is rising—the #BA2 sublineage of #Omicron has *tripled* in one week, dislodging the old Omicron from total dominance—BA2 now at 3.6% and climbing fast. Expect to be dominant by March. Omicron reinfections are possible. 🧵 covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tra… ImageImage
2) Omicron subvariant #BA2 now seems to be surging nationwide (pink), especially in the coastal regions of the Us the fastest. This means it’s not a fluke increase. US’s #BA2 trend will follow Europe’s rise for sure. Image
3) I’ve been worried about #BA2 for a while. In 3rd week of January, it was rising in Denmark— it’s now near total dominant in Denmark.

Let this sink in—All 6 high school basketball 🏀 players in this photo tested positive for #COVID19 in last 4 day… Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. None of them wore a mask in any legit way. 1 in 7 infected kids get #LongCovid—➡️4 out of 30-kid COVID+ class.

HT @dianaberrent
2) but but but, masks are too hard to wear in sports…. Meanwhile at the #Olympics2022
3) Yes it’s 1 in 7 infected kids that get #LongCovid. It’s been widely reported and comes from @ONS

RIP Dr Li Wenliang who first sounded the alarm🚨 in Wuhan—but muzzled by his hospital & leaders when he tried to warn. Authorities didn’t listen. He shouted over & over—almost terminated from his job for trying to warn the 🌍. Until it was too late. ➡️ We still have not learned!
2) Dr Li was reprimanded for “spreading falsehoods” about the virus. The government later posthumously rescinded the reprimand after his death. Too little too late. His wife was pregnant with their 2nd child when he died. She gave birth in June as a widow. npr.org/sections/coron…
3) Many mourned and paid tribute to Dr Li Wenliang after his death. Like countless others, I couldn’t stop crying in February 2020 when he died. Let’s please not let him die in vain!!! 🙏

📍“Cryptic” unknown #SARSCoV2 variants were found in New York City sewers, many never before found in humans. Some could infect cells with mouse🐁 and/or rat🐀 ACE2-receptor, & were resistant to different neutralizing monoclonal antibodies. So 🍕rat-COVID?
nature.com/articles/s4146…
2) “Interestingly, all four WNY lineages contained a polymorphism at spike protein residue 498 (Q498H or Q498Y)… both of these polymorphisms have been associated with host range expansion of SARS-CoV-2 into rodents, which are generally resistant to the parent SARS-CoV-2 lineage”
3) It’s very clear that the 4 key NYC sewer #SARSCoV2 variants have an unusual affinity towards favoring mice-ACE2 and rat-ACE2, much higher than human-ACE2 receptor. Hence the reasons the authors think it has mice 🐁 and rat 🐀 as a likely source.

📍 Who is old enough to remember when many mocked “scariants”? Well, over 100,000 Americans died of #COVID19 in the 50 days (from Dec 15th 2021 to Feb 3 2022) ➡️this sits as the 3rd fastest “100k death interval” behind 34 days & 36 days last winter.

#CovidIsNotOver #GetBoosted
2) It’s not over—COVID deaths with the so-called “mild” #Omicron wave has now exceeded both the spring 2020 wave and the 2021 Delta wave, and still hot on the tail chasing last winter’s #COVID19 peak. Are you boosted yet? #GetBoosted
3) I distinctly remember one person (out of many) who mocked and downplayed variants as scariants— widely cited supposed “expert” Monica Gandhi of UCSF… but now 900k Americans are dead and millions more worldwide. Listen 👇
