Multiple videos of Russian forces pushing north and west from Melitopol today.
Fire on the tank would suggest previous clashes
The Ukrainian military appears to be holding well overall (at likely great cost) with a key exception: The south, where it seems to have struggled far more. Notable #Russian advances made today, despite Ukrainian reinforcements.
Berdyansk airport (defunct) in southern #Ukraine has been captured by Russian forces according to local city council facebook.com/berdyanskcc/po…
One of these tactical developments that may sound like nothing but could actually mean a lot, as it has effectively reduced distance between the (initially) Crimea-based offensive and the frontline near Mariupol to around 90 km.
Video from the same location showing #Russian TOS-1 "flamethrower", passing through the city #Ukraine
Those weapons launches volleys Thermobaric rockets. They are war crimes in the making.
Not posting them, but there are multiple videos of destroyed Ukrainian columns in the south, where the fighting is the most difficult for Ukrainian forces. Russian forces have made significant progress there, despite Ukrainian resistance.
I want to caution that, although Ukrainian forces are holding far better than I think Putin expected, Moscow is still making progress in the south, and could link up Donbass with Crimea soon, and push deeper inside central #Ukraine
Wonder if this ⬇️ video isn't related to the one above
More than four days into #Russia's offensive against #Ukraine as talks are slated to start, here is my broad of view of the situation, and where things may go from here ⬇️
Overall, I think it is clear that the Ukrainian military is holding far better than #Russia expected. I don't exclude that Putin was presented a flawed/optimistic view of how things should have gone. As of now the record that was being played in his hear is scratching ⬇️
This is not to say that #Russia has not made any significant advances. Russian forces in the south are on the verge of potentially linking the Donbass with Crimea through a "pincer" move. Linking the two definitely was one of Russia's strategic goals, albeit not the main ⬇️
Statement from the commander of #Kyiv's defense this morning:
- Over past day, #Russia continued to attempt to break through city's defense.
- Tried to storm city outskirts.
- All attempts by Russian troops to achieve their goal failed.
- Enemy suffered significant losses
⬇️
- Russian columns were destroyed.
- Russian forces are demoralized and exhausted.
- We have shown we will protect our home from "uninvited guests".
- Situation under control.
I am wondering if the Mayor of Kyiv is speaking literally when saying that the city is "surrounded". We've been mapping out the Russian offensive, and it seems to me that areas southwest of Kyiv only saw sporadic clashes during Vasylkiv assault yesterday
I am not trying to minimize how dangerous the situation is, but saying that it is impossible to leave Kyiv and that "all ways are blocked" is a big deal for people there.
If any one want to pitch in regarding this, feel free.
Well this is getting weird. Now the Mayor of Kyiv says news that Kyiv is surrounded and that evacuation is impossible is false. He claims it was circulated by Russian outlets - but it came from an interview of him in AP!
RIA quotes Putin's advisor, Vladimir Medinsky, who is also slated to head the Russian delegation, as saying that #Ukraine has agreed to talks ria.ru/20220227/ukrai…
The negotiations will take place at the border between Belarus and #Ukraine according to a Russian outlet.
#Breaking The Kremlin says a Russian delegation has arrived in the Belarusian city of Homel for talks with Ukrainian officials, according to the Kremlin Press Secretary (quoted by TASS)
No indication as to what the Ukrainian response may be but this ⬇️ is a reminder that Belarus is not a neutral country.
And from what I am seeing, Russian forces are pressing the attack near Kyiv
#Breaking: In his speech Zelensky acknowledged Russian proposal, and made the point I mentioned above: #Ukraine cannot negotiate in #Belarus, as it is no longer a neutral country.
