1/ AEOI President Eslami and @iaeaorg DG @rafaelmgrossi have agreed joint statement which outlines process for possible resolution safeguards issues. iaea.org/node/102067

2/ @rafaelmgrossi "will aim to report his conclusion [on safeguards] by the June 2022 Board of Governors." Says process is "losely related" to possible agreement on #JCPOA reinstatement. Seems like this agreement will be major part of final puzzle to be solved.

3/ At press conference, @rafaelmgrossi says IAEA will no longer pursue investigation of uranium metal disc, 1 of 4 open issues. Says nothing more can be done to resolve this issue, hints at material being in different form (melted down, in inventory).

4/ Compares to 2015 "final assessment" of possible military dimension of Iran's nuclear programme and argues this process is different: open-ended but with political commitment by Iran to resolve remaining issues. "We never close things."

5/ @rafaelmgrossi repeatedly emphasises indepence of @iaeaorg: "I as an inspector" make judgements, he says, rejects any notion that politics can interfere with investigation.

6/ Let us keep fingers crossed that Russia's war against Ukraine does not spill over into negotiations at last minute. Attempts to leverage JCPOA would be in nobody's interest, Russia would lose, too, if talks are derailed.

7/7 Finally: So much fun to watch press conference with precise, probing, polite questions by @laurnorman @StLiechtenstein others. Grateful for their reporting! Such should be interactions between IOs/media: transparent, informed, useful and constructive.
