I was never a big fan of Sen Cory Booker, but next time he runs for president, he's going to be my first choice. This speech is so eloquent, so compelling, that it should be watched by every democracy-loving person in the world.
That's the fullest version of Booker's speech I could find, so if you know of a longer version please link it below (and check first that someone hasn't done so already.)
There's also this excellent discussion:
Cory Booker's speech has motivated me to work even harder to speak up for, or offer support to, anyone treated differently bc they are Black, a POC, female, LGBTQ+, young, old, disabled, or part of any group visible or invisible that is marginalized by immutable characteristics.
I spent several years around people who are racist, deliberately, casually, or unknowingly.
At times I have been racist unknowingly. But bc I am open to receiving new info, I started a journey of realizing when and how I've been unknowingly racist or prejudiced against groups.
I'm female but at times have been unknowingly sexist toward other females... I could say this about virtually every group out there. People don't know what they don't know.
That's why it's super important to help educate and inform others. It's a lifelong journey.
I mention my experience as a (now moderate/centrist) conservative bc I happened to learn a lot of the ways the far right (which now includes almost every US Senator and Congressman or woman) are racist and influence others to be so. For them, there can be no excuse.
I found the conduct this week of Republicans toward Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to be despicable and condemning of their characters and individual legacies.
Apparently, Mitch McConnell will vote against her on the Senate floor...
I could not see a single objective reason for Senators not to vote to confirm KJB, so I did a search for McConnell's disclosed "reasons":
They are ALL about policy issues that are not the purview of SCOTUS judges. The alleged bias in her child sex offending decisions record is spurious, of course.
I support increasing the number of SCOTUS judges, btw. It may be the ONLY way to try to save American democracy.
We live in dark times. The pandemic, Jan 6, the ongoing assault on long held voting rights, and Putin's dirty war against Ukraine and all of us, are just some of the current threats to American democracy, and world peace.
The situation is dire.
The Booker Speech can be a salve to the hearts and minds of so many people around the world. It's hard for me to express the value of it. You gotta watch or listen to it directly, at least once.
The global spread of far right ideology has only accelerated in recent years...
On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, former President Bush stated clearly that the 1/6 seditionists and al qaeda are #ChildrenOfTheSameFoulSpirit. Obviously, Putin and his closest supporters are part of that group too.
We have beaten fascist regimes before. We can do it again.
Seeing the outward expression of exemplary characters like KBJ and Cory Booker is a bright spot during these times.
He talked about love of country. I agree with him, that things will get better. The waiting, is the hardest part.

Thread: International Women's Day 2022, US, & Ukraine.
Far right fascists (aka today's GQP) like chiming in to say female privilege is alive and well in the law requiring (almost) all men aged 18-25 to be registered for the draft, should one be needed.
Current US admin policy is to do all it can to avoid needing to have boots on the ground in Europe and elsewhere.
Since 1/24/22 the global security situation has worsened. If things get to a certain point, the US may need to bring back the draft.
It's mistake to exclusively think of the wars the US has been involved in since 1945, especially Vietnam. I see far greater parallels between our current crisis and 1939-45.
In both cases, none of the allied countries were sufficiently ready to defend ourselves and win the war.
I am able to sleep at night because I believe RU military personnel between Putin and whoever would actually fire a nuclear weapon are planning to stop that happening.
US Army General Mark Milley ensured the same kind of safety in the last insane days of TFG's presidency.
To understand the current Russian war against Ukraine (and quite frankly, the rest of us) it helps to understand the period before and during WWII.
The British SOE and Partisans in European countries come to mind:
Source: For my assertion that Hitler was bad not mad, right to the end. It's vital to challenge this narrative.
And, TIKhistory is an exceptionally useful & relevant YT channel on Europe & RU. About half his videos are directly relevant to this war.
I was perplexed by Putin calling the Ukraine government Nazis and drug addicts. Putin's behavior is far closer to that of the actual Nazis than just about every world leader. (Assad springs to mind as a notable exception.) So he's projecting. Is he also projecting about drugs?
It's a huge step & will have some negative consequences for various people, institutions, & countries. Yesterday I urged patience to see if harsher actions would be taken, & I was right (in this matter.)
My source for that belief is this guy, who I've been following for some time and esp. in this situation affecting Ukraine and the other democratic countries of the world.
Every question you have about it is answered somewhere on his youtube channel:
Good to see in Biden's statements that he is *listening* to America's European allies and joining them in their responses to Russian aggression as much as he can at this time. Who knows what the future holds.
I have written many times about the delay in entering WWI & WWII.
Thread: Social media platforms that allow hoaxes to trend are despicable.
HM Queen Elizabeth of the UK and her other realms (eg NZ), is alive and following doctor's orders to rest.
Whenever she eventually dies, go to bbc.com for the actual truth about it.
Also, it's really weird when ppl refer to the Queen as Queen Elizabeth. It's not incorrect, I know she's not the only (actual, lawful) Queen in the world, but she's always referred to as the Queen here.
"The Queen" will also be how we refer to Queen Camilla & Queen Catherine.
No, Twitter, this headline doesn't fix the problem.
I suggest, at the top of the list, for at least 12 hours, you should say:
"Queen Elizabeth is alive. Reports of her death at this time are a hoax."
We had to watch this happening for years with Prince Philip.
