Here are some of the big reasons #ensdomains have been getting so much attention!

For those who are wondering:

๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ‘‡
1a. - DNS

To really understand #ensdomain you first need to know their web2 counterpart: #dns, which means "domain name system". We take for granted what it does for us because we don't have to remember numbers like "142.250.188.238" in order to get to google.com.
1b.

But, without DNS, we would have to (sort of; there were other protocols developed as solutions before DNS, but DNS is what we have been using since 1983. The previous solutions were not very efficient, but I won't go into a tangent about them).
1c.

So, #ens solves for #web3 what dns does for web2 in the sense that it translates addresses like:

"0x1D4F3Eb7DcD7eE76F99c67A699de4Da3B764b82D"

into something much easier to remember, such as:
"0-9.eth". However, as is the nature of web3, it's also capable of much more..
2a. - Decentralization

There are many reasons why some may or may not believe #decentralization is beneficial, but I will explain a couple of the reasons why some may view it as helpful. To begin with: #Decentralized Websites. Through the utilization of a platform
2b.

like @IPFS you may host files in a wholly decentralized & distributed manner. In a way akin to torrenting. For example: take a look at bibl.eth.link (bibl.eth will work on it's own in @opera & other integrated browsers). Image
2c.

The owner of bibl.eth (@dboy_eth) is hosting the entire #KingJamesVersion of the #Bible there under the distributed / decentralized content hash of: ipfs://QmdqeuMhtGgSJ7Nm5brxmtikReaGrfFg18KEVAsPLnfz3Y. ENS simply redirects a browser to that hash where the files are hosted.
2d.

Now, whether you are a religious person or not you can see how powerful the implications of this may be. As long as you save that content ID you will always have access to the Bible if you have access to the internet.
2e.

Another aspect that may be utilized, for better or for worse, is decentralized ownership of names. For instance: without going too deep into cybersquatting laws I will say that, today, @Nike could cause you some trouble if you happened to catch the lease on
2f.

Nike.com when it expired (it has happened with Googles domains before). Though, with ENS it is possible that a court orders that you are not allowed to use the domain for commercial purposes or even order that you must return it, but you would always have the
2g.

option of sending Nike.eth to the burn address. You could then extend the registration infinitely, as long as you pay the fee, so that no one could ever use Nike.eth. It would remain in the dead wallet. That being said, I believe @ensdomains reserved the most popular
2h.

business names for those businesses for quite some time before they were released to be available to the public, if that has even happened yet (don't quote me on that). So, those are 2 ways that the decentralization of ens names may be viewed as beneficial, but there's more:
3a. - Payment Routing

Payment Routing #s are nothing new. Every single bank has them & every single bank account has it's own unique & very long numbers. How long does it take you to memorize your bank account # when you get a new one (if ever)? The U.S. government recently
3b.

signed an executive order to begin the research of the potential for use of something they're calling the #CBDC; #CentralBankDigitalCurrency. If currency on #blockchain becomes the norm then ENS provides a solution to something that we do not even currently have for fiat.
3c.

Isn't BOfA.eth much easier to remember (and type) than 121000358, @BankofAmerica?
4a. - But Why Numbers?

This is where numbers tie in for individuals. Numbers are a universal language. 1 is easier to remember than 11 which is easier to remember than 140, which is easier to remember than 1,084, and so on. This is why numbers (indefinitely finite) will always
4b.

be, if nothing else, a huge flex & order of convenience for the holder to themselves, their brand, or organization. ENS names can act as the root for: webhosting, payment routing, linktrees, decentralized websites, subdomains, dns solution, digital messenging, and more.
4c.

The ultimate potential of ENS is only as limited as the ingenuity & innovation built from the #Ethereum network. Already having the support of over 100 blockchains makes ENS the leading competitor in the web3 naming system space. So, easily memorizable #s & names will always
4d.

be extremely valuable to someone. Just look at past sales of 3 & 4 digit .coms. I don't consider recent volume because how do you use volume for reference on an 11k supply in a naming system that 5 billion people use?
5a. - Potential Downside

Of course nothing is guaranteed and there are a few things to be wary of in regards to this @ensactivity wave. First of all; @unstoppableweb is also a top competitor in the web3 naming system space & they own many root domains such as .crypto, .nft,
5b.

.dao, .wallet, & more. #UnstoppableDomains are also integrated with many blockchains & have a lot of corporate backing & heavy marketing. They are ultimately centralized, but you can purchase their names with a one-time payment (debit, credit, or crypto) &
5c.

immediately xfer them to a non-custodial wallet of your choice, if you wish, or you may hold & manage them in your account on unstoppabledomains.com/?ref=8914e722fโ€ฆ (if you've been enjoying this thread I would greatly appreciate if you'd use this link if you decide to purchase any).
5d.

You can see how this greatly contrasts the subscriptions fees & barrier to entry / adoption of ENS. Who knows if .eth or .wallet will reign supreme? Who will become .com & who will take the place of alternatives such as .net, .org, .us, etc?
5e.

Another obvious reason why ENS names may not be all they're cracked up to be is the fact that Ethereum may not become the future of the decentralized internet. The future of the internet may not be decentralized or utilize blockchain much at all. No one can say for sure.
6a. - Bonus Section

If you're intrigued by ENS and the things I explained above you may find interest in @ethmail_cc. Through their website: ethmail.cc you may use any Ethereum address or ENS name just as you would a traditional email address.

Hey @ENS_DAO @ensdomains @enspresident,

I wrote this article to help breakdown some of the major utilities of #ensdomains for the layman.

I would absolutely love your feedback:
