#EUChipsAct The @EU_Commission has published a staff working document #SWD which consists of 4 parts. Can be found here:

A long 🧵with some thoughts/comments on it 1/x
The first chapter provides a very good overview on the #semiconductor industry/value chain, elaborating also on important players/ market shares.

Basically, they could have used also the study by @snv_berlin / @JPKleinhans on that, but anyway, it is quite well analysed. 2/x
imho every journalist that want to cover a #semiconductor topic should easily be able to comment/edit on this section. If someone is new on this field, it is a very good initial read to understand the sector. 3/x
Figure 3 shows @Accenture as source - I wonder why the @EU_Commission did not use the picture from European manufacturers' @Fairphone website.

In general chapter 1 focusses pretty much (if not fully) on logic, missing a little bit explanations on #memory production as well as on aspects like heterogenous integration/systems on chip (SOC).
I want to refer to @snv_berlin / @JPKleinhans again

stiftung-nv.de/de/publikation…

5/x
Chapter 2 elaborates on the chip crisis. Here it should be noted that the utilization rate (figure 7) quality/yield is not fully reflected imho, also it should be noted that EVERY major fab of course runs 24/7. 6/x Image
In particular for section 2.3 there is again a very good publication by @snv_berlin @Julia_C_Hess @JPKleinhans as well (no I am not affiliated to or paid by them ;) ) stiftung-nv.de/de/publikation…

7/x
The example 2.4.5 is underlining the need for #semiconductors also for the Green (digital and resilient) Europe - a must-read also for @BMWK imho.

8/x Image
section 2.5 "The flight bans over Russia have led to
longer air freight routes, with corresponding cost increases and delays. "

An example here is #Japan (note its importance esp. on some materials on p7 of the doc) simpleflying.com/jal-ana-europe…

9/x
section 3 - Market outlook. Not much to comment here, only the link to the full @ZVEIorg source (see figure 13)

zvei.org/fileadmin/user…

10/x Image
on 3.3.3 #Research: Technically, beside the member states also the regions have to be mentioned here. e.g., @SachsenDe co-invested into @ECSELJU , @thueringende co-invested into the latest @KDT_JU kdt-ju.europa.eu/calls/kdt-ju-c…

#SWD #ChipsAct @EU_CoR 11/x
Section 4 addresses further needs, here I want to hightlight on 4.2 #automotive and in particular on the fact that #Tesla according to rumours already uses 7nm technology
asiantechpress.com/beats-tsmc-sam…

12/x
section 4.5 of the #SWD on the #EUChipsAct might be discussed once also @Sicherheitspod, for today I link 2 docs related to #GaN technology - certainly worth a look in particular to available #Gallium sources ( 0 in Europe)

apps.dtic.mil/sti/pdfs/AD112…
pubs.usgs.gov/periodicals/mc…

13/x Image
No major comments on chapter 5, but a link to an (ended) ITRS road map
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internati…

14/x
chapter 6 provides further outlook, again no comments but a shameless commercial block -
silicon-saxony-day.de/highlights/age…

See you on 28.6. in #Dresden? :)

15/x
Chapter 7 and 8 explain the proposed #ChipsAct in detail, won't comment on that with 1 exception.
From my point of view, the building of a GaN wafer factory (e.g. by #FCM ) would not fit into the current definition of first-of-a-kind in pillar 2 which is questionable imho 16/x
The rest are annexes - overall, I really enjoyed reading this, looking fwd to any comments
