Following the weekend's IPEF Supply Chain Agreement announcement, we published a new report focused on #semiconductors and supply chain resiliency. We identify IPEF as the best vehicle for enacting the friendshoring agenda and provide 8 recommendations.
csis.org/analysis/secur…
1⃣ Establish trusted trading partner standards for future cooperation.

IPEF’s diverse membership makes it challenging to develop trusted partner models for chips cooperation, but laying the foundation for greater export control coordination is a key step.
2⃣ Accept that trusted partnership relationships are *reciprocal.*

Developing secure, resilient supply chains in the semiconductor sector is not simply a matter of reshoring. Partnerships rely on all the parties to support and reinforce mutually agreed-upon outcomes.

Silicon Valley UK?

The UK Chancellor has declared that he wants the UK to become the next Silicon Valley.

Hermann Hauser, when asked on @BBCNewsnight about the chances of this happening, replied “zero”.

(BBC Newsnight, 18th April 2023).

#Nexperia #semiconductors
1/
He should know, being the Co-founder of Amadeus Capital Partners, and writing a book on technology sovereignty.

He said Government efforts to reverse Nexperia’s takeover of Newport Wafer Fab would achieve exactly the opposite of what is desired: technology independence. 2/
Semiconductor sovereignty will be achieved by China, US and EU. China has the money and talent so it is only a matter of time.

Whereas Britain “is a minnow and will always be a minnow”. BREXIT was the greatest loss of sovereignty since 1066.

2/ The challenge for China isn't technological or scientific, it's about effectively organizing existing knowledge to recreate a supply chain.
3/ And let's be real, when it comes to organization and applying knowledge to practical problems, China can give any country a run for its money.

$SPX
An unexpected rally pushed #SPX 50 points higher today on increased volume

We can say it was a successful retest or bounce from the 100DMA

It closed at 20DMA and is now in the "pinch". Tomorrow we'll know which side #SPX is going to come out on

#SPX Image
$DIA
Another rally on higher volume

Today closed above the 20DMA, somewhat bullish if it is able to hold that ground.

Big impulsive green candle, indicating further upside

It is still in the "extension" zone of its trend channel.

TSMC Arizona has turned into a Chinese Communist Party (CCP, China) talking point, with scary stories daily.

Example:
“The U.S. is turning TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co) into ASMC (American SMC)," and no Taiwan politician dares say no to the U.S.

Thread 1/9 $TSM

It looks like a CCP effort to hurt U.S.-Taiwan relations.

What’s most disappointing is the lack of creativity – the perpetrators clearly know little about the semiconductor industry.
#semiconductor $TSM
3/9 Taiwan’s semiconductor industry began in the 1960s, about when the CCP made it a priority.

But where the CCP failed, Taiwan flourished.

Taipei built a vibrant ecosystem, and a number of global powerhouses. Its lead isn’t going away anytime soon.

Let’s count ’em down.

This spiral of digitalisation leading to electrification is one of the primary reasons why we are electrifying our energy systems. I can do without coal but I cannot do anything in this modern #digital world without electricity.

US took some of its toughest ever actions against China's tech sector with latest curb on chip exports, which could ultimately hobble China's semiconductor industry. But it's not just the rules themselves but the nature of the chip supply chain that make it possible 1/14 🧵
The second and third point are key. The second point is about how the rules could affect businesses that aren't even American-owned. And the third is about cutting key advanced chipmaking machines off from #China 2/14
There is precedent. The U.S. used the so-called foreign direct product rule before on the poster child of the Trump-era U.S.-China tech tensions — Huawei. #Huawei was cut off from the most advanced chips that TSMC was manufacturing and that were designed for its smartphones 3/14

Yesterday, we held the first "Defence and Statecraft Forum" & we were honoured to welcome a number of great guests. For those that couldn't make it, we are going to write a thread on the main points (in no particular order)🧵 /1

@Brussels_School #Defence #Statecraft
Supporters of #Ukraine are not doing enough to think about the plan for and repercussions of the country's eventual accession to the #EU and #NATO. One implication is that political and military support will have to be drastically enhanced. /2
Western countries have been providing weapons and support to #Ukraine, albeit more can certainly been done. However, as Ukraine presses #Russia there is a need to send Main Battle Tanks and Armoured Fighting Vehicles, as well as to ramp up deliveries of munitions.

The chief technology officer of ASML said high-NA may be the end of the line for lithography.

2/9 ASML CTO
ASML is researching the successor to high-NA, called hyper-NA. But the cost of hyper-NA may be too high.

“If the cost of hyper-NA grows as fast as we’ve seen in high-NA, it will pretty much be economically unfeasible,” Van den Brink said.

The goal of ASML’s hyper-NA research program is to come up with ways to keep costs down.

“We’re trying to come up with fundamental changes in manufacturing and design to make sure that if we’re going to do it, it will be economically feasible,” he said.

OK, so we just finished our 3-paper series on the #EUChipsAct.

The 3. paper assesses the effectiveness of the proposed #Crisis Response Toolbox.

stiftung-nv.de/en/publication…

We see many, many problems. Here's why... 🧵

#semiconductors #chips #chipshortage #Europe Image
The proposal talks about utilizing common purchasing, export restrictions and priority-rated orders during future chip shortages to ensure security of supply for Europe.

We also added national reserves since several countries (Spain, Japan...) are thinking about those.
Let's walk through the value chain, shall we?

Chips:
None of the tools are effective when applied to individual chips because semiconductors are...
- highly customized/not substitutable
- end-products (cars...) need ~1000 chips from all over the world

Ex-TSMC R&D boss Shang-yi Chiang made headlines last week over a Computer History Museum interview. Chiang was vital to TSMC's success. When he joined TSMC in 1997, it was a technology laggard. When he retired in 2013, it was an industry leader. $TSM #semiconductors

“0.13 micron (130-nanometers, in year 2000) was a very important node for TSMC because we became the first one in the world to deliver manufacturing wafer of copper and low-K. I remember going, "Wow! This company did something."

Other chipmakers asked Chiang, "We all take 2-years to develop one generation, how come you guys can do it in 1 or 1 ½ year?"

Chiang: "because my R&D engineer works three shifts (24-hours a day) and you only work one shift (8-hours)…"
