The formal sector in South Africa accounts for 68,3% of total #employment. Formal sector employment increased by 408 000 jobs between Q4:2021 and Q1:2022.
Employment increased by 370 000 in Q1:2022 compared to Q4:2021. Increases in #employment were mainly in community and social services, #manufacturing and trade.
Approximately 3,8 million (37,0%) out of 10,2 million young people aged 15-24 years were not in #employment, #education or training (NEET). The overall NEET rate increased by 4,6 percentage points in Q1:2022 compared to Q1:2021.
Black African women are the most vulnerable with an #unemployment rate of 40,6% in Q1:2022. This is 4,1 percentage points higher than the national average for women at 36,4%.
Of the 14,9 million persons who were employed in Q1:2022, at least 8 in every ten (84,2%) were expected to work during the national lockdown by the companies/organisations they work for.
Over 93% of graduates & those with other tertiary education received full salaries in Q1:2022.The share of graduates receiving full salary increased by 0,6 of a percentage point between Q4:2021 (94,5%) & Q1:2022 (95,1%).
Births are the main driver of population growth in South Africa. Compared to previous years, deaths in 2021 are significantly higher as a result of the #COVID19 outbreak.
More than half of the #population live in 3 provinces - GP, KZN and WC. GP remains SA’s most populated province with approximately 15,5 million people (26%).

South Africa’s unemployment rate increase by 1,0 percentage point to 30,1% in Q1:2020 compared to Q4:2019. The unemployment rate usually increases between Q4 and Q1 each year.
The working age population (15-64 years) in Q1:2020 was 38,9 million. The working age population (15 – 64 years) increased by 147 000 people between Q4:2019 and Q1:2020.
7 of the 10 industries contracted in Q4:2019. Transport and trade were the main drags on overall activity. Finance, mining and personal services registered positive growth.
The primary sector declined by 0,4% in Q4:2019. #Agriculture experienced its 4th consecutive quarter of negative growth, falling by 7,6%, while mining growth was driven largely by platinum group metals, iron ore & gold.
