Academic folks, do you know your ONE HABIT that's HOLDING YOU BACK?

FAKE-WORKING

What's fake-working and how to stop doing it?

🧵

@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics Fake-working is when you *think* you're working but actually you're NOT.

Example: Browsing JSTOR aimlessly, answering unimportant emails, etc.

2/12
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics Fake-working is NOT productive procrastination.

Why?

Because in productive procrastination, you're still doing something "productive."

Example: You're reading articles to avoid writing. You're not writing but what you're reading is still useful.

3/12
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics How to detect if you're fake-working?

After a work session, write down what you accomplished in the session.

If you struggle to write down precisely what you did, it was fake-working.

4/12
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics How to stop fake-working?

Simple!

Start an Accountability Journal.

5/12 Image
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics Before starting a work session, write down what you will do.

Keep these sessions limited to 25 min (in the start).

Or 45 min, if 25 min is too short a period for you to get into your groove.

After the session, write down what you did, and if you faced any problems.

6/12 Image
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics Leave your work station the moment a session is over.

This is a MUST.

Don't be like, let me watch a few cat videos.

If you want to watch cat videos, schedule a session for that.

Then put it in your Accountability Journal.

7/12
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics Once your work day is over you MUST NOT work anymore.

I know people who properly pack their laptops at the end of the day even when they work from home.

NOT WORKING is as important as working.

8/12
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics Fill your non-working hours with activities YOU ENJOY.

I enjoy watching my son practice drumming.

I also enjoy listening to music while having (quite) a few drinks 😀

9/12
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics Be intentional when you're working.

Be equally intentional when you're NOT working.

BOTH are important. EQUALLY!

Follow these tips for a week and see your productivity increase manifold.

10/12
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics Quick question: What do you do when you fake-work?

I used to write unimportant emails and pretend I was working.

11/12
@AcademicChatter @Momademia @PhD_Genie @ThePhDPlace @PhDVoice @OpenAcademics Hopefully, this thread will make you more self-aware and you will stop fake-working.

Cheers!

How I REVISED my first journal article in light of PEER REVIEW reports

🧵

@AcademicChatter @SAAcademia @academicvoices @PhDVoice @GrumpyReviewer2 @PhD_Genie #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #phdlife
My first article was published in the prestigious "Journal of World Literature" in 2020.

For this article I received detailed feedback from:

• Two editors
• Anonymous reviewers This paper investigates how Mohsin Hamid’s fiction challen
In this thread, I'll tell you how I incorporated the reviewers'/editors' feedback into my article.

I started by speed reading the reports.

Like most people, the reviewer's reports made me anxious, which was understandable.

A (Non-Boring) Twitter History of the Word, Namāz ( نماز#, #नमाज़)

The word “namāz” in #Urdu/#Hindi is used for the five daily prayers that every #Muslim is supposed to offer.

The word for the five daily prayers in #Arabic , however, is salat, صَلاة

1/12
Of Persian import, namāz has a long and extremely complex history, which can be traced back to the pre-Islamic past.

The origin of namāz can be traced back to an ancient proto-Indo-European root, nam (to bow, to bend).

2/12
The verb nam (to bow) and the noun namah-/namas- (prostration, reverence) can be found in both #Sanskrit and Avestan, the Zoroastrian #Scripture .

1. #Fulbright Personal Statement (PS) 101

Part 1

Before you start writing your PS, you MUST know what a PS actually is. It's very important.

I've seen people trying to write a PS without even knowing what it is, or what it's purpose is 🧵 (20 tweets)
2. It may be because in Pak/South Asian educational systems, one is required to memorize the materials taught and reproduce them in exams 😢

If you come from such an educational background, writing a PS would ask a significant SHIFT in your perspective.
3. I've seen a lot of people resist changing their worldview as a result of which they approach PS with resentment and even anger 🤷‍♂️

If you do so, your resentment/anger would show through your writing. And you'll only have your own self to blame then.

I teach a course on #Pakistani #Literature at @binghamtonu. This time around I started every class with playing a song on @YouTube.

This served various pedagogical purposes and also helped latecomers 😂

Here's the list of songs we listened to this semester

Chakwal Group and @iambohemia @cokestudio
2. #Punjabi Tappe by one of the most beautiful Punjabi couples: Veena and Anant @anantkiveena

When it comes to tappe, national borders don't mean shit
