🙃🤦😞 We're shocked to hear reports that the government may ditch plans to pay farmers to protect nature and climate – this would be a catastrophic mistake by the new Prime Minister

🧵👇 theguardian.com/environment/20…
🚜4⃣🍲🌍🐝 Tackling the climate emergency and mass decline in wildlife populations is vital for our long-term food security.

To abandon plans to transform the way we support English farmers at such a crucial time would be an outrage.

2/6
So much progress has already been made, with years of consultation and planning, by so many.

🙄 A handbrake turn on the biggest opportunity to fix our broken farming support system in the last 50 years would betray our commitments to nature and climate

3/6
✊💚🚜As importantly, a U-turn on these plans would also betray all those farmers who have already invested so much in tests and trials so that they may benefit from the new Environmental Land Management Schemes.

4/6 #BackBritishFarming
We know most farmers care deeply about the environment - it's vital that they’re rewarded to protect it.

This is especially important in the face of trade deals that threaten to undercut🇬🇧farmers with food imports ordered to lower environmental and animal welfare standards.

5/6
Government must proceed with the most evidence-based solution as planned – a rapid shift to agroecological, nature-friendly farming.

Thread/What do you think of when we talk about #biodiversity?

There's so much more to our planet's ecology than just plants, trees & animals... Our #soils are home to a quarter of the world's species - many of which include #fungi 🍄
2/ From the ingredients we cook with, to the medicines that heal us and the #woodwideweb that runs beneath our feet, #fungi are vital to our existence, and all life on earth, yet they are the oft-neglected kingdom...
3/This month's #BookClub features @MerlinSheldrake's 'Entangled Life' - an exploration of the amazing world of fungi, and the role they play in shaping all aspects of our world - "eating rock, making soil, digesting pollutants and nourishing and killing plants"

Synthetic #fertilisers have disrupted the natural #nitrogen cycle & become the biggest driver of nitrogen pollution

In today's Fixing Nitrogen panel at #ORFCGlobal, we'll explore how we can strike a nitrogen balance feat @RushallOrganics @Love_plants @WoodlandTrust & more ⚖
Live from 'Fixing Nitrogen', Abi Bunker from @WoodlandTrust says “Trees benefit both wildlife & people ... Most UK woodlands are impacted negatively by nitrogen deposition, at which the ecosystem will deteriorate”
@Love_plants @RushallOrganics @WoodlandTrust @TWBFarms #ORFCGlobal
Public Health specialist @kristinbash tells us that globally, an astonishing 8.8b lives are lost due to small particulate matter pollution. In UK, it’s about 40,000 lives.

She goes on to detail the effects of water pollution👇

Learn about #nitrogen @ 2PM!🚨

#ORFCGlobal's panel “Nitrogen: The Global Farming Challenge” – chaired by @JoLewisSA - will outline the scale of the nitrogen challenge for #farming, discuss global actions to reduce nitrogen excess at #COP26 & more

Tune in orfc.org.uk/session/nitrog…
Listening to Mark Sutton @UK_CEH explain the issues:

“The scaling up of nitrogen happened, and it got cheaper, which has meant people aren’t as careful with it as they should be. Everybody has an opportunity to manage nitrogen more responsibly”

#COP26 #ORFCGlobal
Vijay Kumar talks about his work with over 1m farmers in Andhra Pradesh, India, reducing synthetic #nitrogen & other inputs. Women farmers often lead the work, influencing 1 farmer at a time.

Results? Better health of soil, people & crops.
Inspiring in scale, approach & impact.

THREAD: 1/5

The lack of consultation on authorising #neonics is unacceptable🚫

As has been previously evidenced, it will be very hard to prevent these #pesticides making their way into plants & rivers, thereby damaging our #wildlife
2/5

WE BELIEVE: Emergency authorisations like the introduction of #neonicotinoids in #farming are a short-term crutch that will stifle innovation and long-term thinking💔

It’s vital we think of #SUSTAINABLE & #ENVIRONMENTAL methods of protecting our crops against pests, instead
3/5

WE NEED GOVT. TO:

A) Look at a long-term strategy for a #sustainable future for sugar beet in the UK - addressing its role in rotations, health issues, farm incomes, jobs & the environment 🚜

Thread/ Show some💓for British #farmers, who are working so hard to put good food on our tables this winter 🙌

Do you know what it takes to rear a #highwelfare turkey for #Christmas? Or to grow those tasty carrots in a way that works with #nature?
2/ Agroecological #farming, like #organic, takes a lot of care & hard work - #farmers are stewards of the land, protecting the health & wellbeing of people, plants, soil and planet. Read on to hear from some of our certified farmers about life on the farm this #Christmas..
3/ Graeme & Vivienne Matravas took on @manororganic in 1994 & immediately set about converting it to #organic - these days, they're managing a pedigree flock of Lleyn sheep, a beef herd of local rare breed cattle, chickens, turkeys, an organic farm shop and organic bakery...
