Humans desire comfort & community acceptance, and in a fearful and uncertain world many turn to cults because they tend to promote exactly that. Cult leaders are often Pied Pipers who make irresponsible promises that are unattainable but also offered by no other group in society.
Cult indoctrination or thought reform used to be a long process achieved in one-to-one face-to-face contact. Now access to the internet and social media has led to quick & easy self-indoctrination or self-radicalization. It's much easier to find people into extremist ideologies.
