A couple of years ago, during the #Pandemic, a number of women directors (including me), had had enough of the inequality amongst male & #femaledirectors of #documentaries in the UK industry. @WeAreDocWomen was a result of a number of women coming together ...
to effect real change. #WeareDocWomen was already formed a number of years earlier, but it wasn't until the #Pandemic that the glaring inequality amongst directors became so obvious. Then the #tvgendergapreport came out which showed just how bad that inequality was ...
#WeAreDocWomen spoke of an entrenched bias in the TV industry that requires fundamental change: “The British media prides itself on telling the stories of who our society is today, but with these figures that is patently impossible ...
... when the majority of the content is being filtered through a prism which excludes so many sections of our community, it is not reflective of the world in which we live.” #tvgendergap#unconsciousbias#femaledirectors
This is esp so since figures released by #DirectorsUK in 2018 showed the #gendergap in factual TV had actually WIDENED across all four of the main U.K. broadcasters, with female directors in factual programming dropping by 10% ... #unconsciousbias#femaledirectors#wearedocwomen

... initiatives and networking events that have led to no real change when it comes to decisions about who gets to direct." And hence the 50/50 pledge was launched to have 50% of #femaledirectors represented in their factual output. It sadly had to happen.
To their credit, the #BBC and #Channel4 quickly signed up to the 50/50 pledge. It's now thanks to the very hard lobbying work of @WeAreDocWomen that 67 #networks & UK #productioncompanies have now signed up to the pledge. I salute you all & look forward to seeing real change ...
... in the wildlife capital of #NZ – #Dunedin (Otepoti). I’m totally blown away by the depth & breadth of the #conservation work happening all over #Aotearoa, especially to help save NZ’s endemic #wildlife. Standby for a #conservation#thread ... :)
#NZ has a number of native species currently under threat - from forest birds like the Kea, the iconic Kiwi, Kākāpō & Takahē. But it’s Dunedin that is hailed as the #wildlifecapitalofNZ because it’s here that you can see so much wildlife – from #sealions#furseals#penguins ...
