This excellent report by @kathrynsbach is very sobering. Every country, especially those who have let #Covid rip, can expect major economic damage because of #LongCovid. But as a survivor of a historical epidemic that triggered mass #MECFS I think there's plenty more to come. A🧵
2/ What governments worldwide don't yet seem to realise is that - even if the pandemic ends tomorrow, and not a single extra person falls victim to #LongCovid henceforth - the damage to people's lives & entire economies will likely snowball significantly over time.
3/ They don't realise this yet because governments worldwide have collectively ignored #MECFS etc for decades. They've failed to learn from previous viral epidemics that have triggered long-term disability, because they've failed to track adverse health outcomes longitudinally.

More and more govts - #Nigeria #Brazil #Colombia #Australia #NZ - are approving a drought-resistant #GMwheat called #HB4. Produced by Argentine corporation #Bioceres, it will be used for food & animal feed. Given today’s food & climate crises, urgent action is needed. 🧵 1/8 Image
#HB4wheat, together with #GoldenRice and #newGMOs, is part of an industry push to weaken and dodge biosafety rules, while increasing corporate control over #seeds. Here’s how this is playing out in Asia: 2/8
Wheat and rice are not yet fully colonised by the #seedindustry, because farmers can save and replant those seeds. They are also key staple foods in many global South countries, at the centre of today’s rising #food prices. 3/8

#NZ This is a long thread on the issue of harassment & threats made against #WomenInLeadership, primarily #WomenInPolitics.

⬇️ Reviews incidents over time, highlights the danger & escalation of #misogyny & the real life consequences on the personal & our democratic institutions.
This thread is being woven, the week Michael Cruickshank was sentenced to jail in #NZ for threatening to blow our #WomanPrimeMinister’s head off & to “..wipe you off this f---planet”- Also arrested this week Richard Sivell who has allegedly been posting threatening messages.
Here you can take a look at #OnlineAbuse ~ ⬇️ is a really useful article by @shesource & @WMCLive that names online hostile behaviour, how it is that #Women are targeted, & explains why “online harassment exists on a continuum with offline violence”…

#NZ #ExtremeWeather Update thread:

The latest JTWC update has Cyclone Dovi strengthening to 96 knots of sustained winds, putting it on the threshold of Category 3 Hurricane Strength.
While #CycloneDOVI is very unlikely to maintain anything close to this all the way to NZ, this is not good news for the Nth Island in rain/flooding terms.

[Image: 24 hour satellite animation of #Dovi featuring New Caledonian radar data showing an intense well formed eyewall.]
Outflow of moisture - an atmospheric river - generated by #CycloneDovi is already delivering intense rains in NZ in a band which is steadily moving northwards.

A strengthening #Dovi will increase the amount of moisture in this river.

All eyes on Westport (again). #ExtremeWeather #nz

An overnight satellite + weather radar overlap (12 hours) showing consistent moderate rain in the Buller River catchment.

The next 36 hours will be critical. With evacuation of the town expected today.
A live video cross to @radionz's @CheckpointRNZ from Westport, reporting on preparations in the town which was severely flooded last July by a similar #extremeweather event.…
Here's a broader view showing all of NZ and the cause of the rain converging atmospheric rivers coming together over the Tasman Sea and bringing a continuous stream of thunderstorms towards the Southern Alps.

#NZ #ExtremeWeather Update Thread.

The quoted thread addresses the long term threat posed by current conditions - beyond five days - around which there is a lot of uncertainty.

Here's the latest ECMWF model PWAT forecast for the current event - next three days.
The longer term picture depends on a complex storm picture north of NZ with a potential 2nd #ExtremeWeather event beginning around 9th Feb.

The current atmospheric river generated event is expected to conclude in around 5 days. Here's the latest GFS 5 day rain accumulation sim.
Beyond five days as detailed in the quoted thread, the global weather simulations diverge. Here is the GFS's current simulation rainfall expectations Feb 8-13. In this scenario the bad weather continues for a further 6 days.

Hipkins has announced #NZ has moved 9 African nations to the ‘very high risk’ list, meaning non-citizens from these countries cannot enter directly, and NZ citizens travelling from them will have to take 14 MIQ on entry to NZ (not the new shorter process).
These countries are: South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Seychelles, Malawi and Mozambique.
(This is basically the same as the suggestion I made in my article about the new variant on Friday. I hope to bring a follow-up article in time.)

Which #OECD countries have lowered #electricity #emissions? How did they do it, at what pace, at what price?

My 4th round of 4-country profiles: #Austria #Finland, #Italy & #USA

For comparison, I now also include price & emissions average (AVG) from full 24-country sample!

First off, Austria, with ample hydro resources (70%), resulting in whole-period low emissions, well below 24-country AVG
Remaining oil & coal now replaced with non-hydro renewables & gas, further lowering emissions
Prices have tracked AVG prices, with increase last 15 years Image
Finland reduced emissions intensity by 70% in 8 years due to nuclear rollout of late-1970s. Went from AVG to low emissions, maintaining below-AVG prices.

Emissions have stayed below AVG with stable nuclear & hydro stable, supplemented by non-hydro renewables recently. Image

Far out... the #nz govt #covid19nz response over the last two weeks is depressingly terrible. It's clearly turned into a politically-driven strategy now that is at odds with the best health outcomes. The messaging has stopped making sense and is contradictory. 1/n
The government is now avoiding answering basic questions like who is advising them, why they are ignoring public health experts, what modelling they are using, what sort of case numbers, hospitalisation numbers should we expect, whether Level 3 is likely for long term. 2/n
A few weeks ago govt said: 80-85% of 12+ fully vax'd could result in 4-7k deaths and 2.5 - 5.7k peak in hosp. Yet that is the exact scenario we face given with R1.2 now and it likely to be over a month before double vax rate reaches 80%. Now it's "we use a range of models". 3/n

Since coming back to beautiful #Aotearoa, I’ve been ridiculously busy working on an exciting new focus - making films on #conservation, #wildlife & the #climatecrisis. During the #NZ summer I’ve had the privilege of filming in the stunning #OtagoPeninsula ... #Thread
... in the wildlife capital of #NZ#Dunedin (Otepoti). I’m totally blown away by the depth & breadth of the #conservation work happening all over #Aotearoa, especially to help save NZ’s endemic #wildlife. Standby for a #conservation #thread ... :)
#NZ has a number of native species currently under threat - from forest birds like the Kea, the iconic Kiwi, Kākāpō & Takahē. But it’s Dunedin that is hailed as the #wildlifecapitalofNZ because it’s here that you can see so much wildlife – from #sealions #furseals #penguins ...

A Thread about the best test batsmen 1/25
#India #Aus #NZ #Stats #Cricket

A #statistical breakdown

Kane Williamson: 7115 runs @ 54.31, 24x100s
Virat Kohli: 7318 runs @ 53.41, 27x100s
Steve Smith: 7368 runs @ 61.91, 27x100s

Smith here has the best average by a fair way.
But the joy of cricket is in its intricacies so let’s dive a little deeper. At home the 3 batsmen are absolute run machines.

Kane Williamson: 3788 runs @ 65.31 13x100s
Virat Kohli: 3558 runs @ 68.42 13x100s
Steve Smith: 3485 runs @ 68.33 14x100s
Here their statistics are very similar.

However it is worth noting how hard it is to bat in each of these countries. These figures reflect the average runs of each players team mates in the last 10 years.

Australia: 44.27 runs/wicket
New Zealand: 42.28
India: 44.17

ok @DaveSharma i promised i'd explain why your tweet is nonsense & why you shouldn't repeat it.

👇here's #australia vs #newzealand relative emissions since 2005:
• australia ⬆️ 6%
• new zealand ⬇️ 3%

(you'll notice that LULUCF is excluded…)
why is LULUCF (land-use, land-use change & forestry) excluded?

1. measurement methodologies aren't standard between countries & frequently change — no robust method to compare countries
2. annual fluctuations are high / noisy

data: PRIMAP-hist v2.1…
3. the vast majority of australia's LULUCF variation is driven by changes to QLD land-clearing laws, a function of state political tussles, and nothing to do with commonwealth policy.
4. australia is famous for using LULUCF as a fudge, see @MichaelM_ACT:…

A thought about political pathology. Most understand now the contagion of Trump’s particular personality. But this issue of mental fitness for governance is relevant even in a country like #NZ. Younger Kiwis can be more emotionally intelligent than previous generations.
2. And that matters these days, more than ever. Because effective leadership demands high levels of emotional intelligence. But these days we are ALL super-sensitive to emotional pathology in the people who affect our lives. We can smell narcissism a mile off.
3. My theory is that Jacinda Ardern is just a very grounded person, with a stable, largely trauma-free background, combined with very good skills for her job. This is why #NZ feels confidence in her. It’s not an act - you can’t fake these things.

seeing as we can't talk about other things on here today 😬 & given that I've spent the past week poring over the #TeTārukeāTāwhiri: #Auckland's #Climate Plan text again, I thought you might be interested in a few key parts of the Plan that are often overlooked.
first off, why Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri?
a gift from the mana whenua of Tāmaki, this cultural narrative is deeply emebedded in this place, but critically "...calls for a change in our response, from a human-centred approach to an ecological-centred approach..." 2/x
Mana Whenua, through the Kaitiki Forum, have played a key role in developing our #ClimateAction response, drawing together wisdom & knowledge of Tāmaki w/ the understanding that living systems & #whakapapa relationships are key to #wellbeing, #sustainability & #resilience. 3/x

A #rugby thread.

1/x I'm living in #Aoteoroa New Zealand, but am a native of the sports-addled USA city of #Boston. I am not as fanatical for the home teams as most of my bruthiznsistiz in that place, but I do enjoy live, in-person stadium sports events very much indeed.
2/x #NZ is one of the only places on the face of the Earth right now where you can attend live, in-person stadium sports events. Specifically, rugby. Specifically, the national team—the world-famous @AllBlacks.
3/x I've been to precisely one rugby game, at @skystadium here in #Wellington, NZ's capital city. I enjoyed it immensely. Yes, it's true, I had little clue what was going on down on the field (pitch?), but it sure seemed exciting, and the other fans seemed thrilled. So, all good.
