Because no one else will say it out loud about Democrats, Biden and womens equal rights (the #ERA), I’m starting a thread that I hope goes viral because it will educate people enough to pressure the president to do his fucking job this year.
@POTUS #Biden is completely responsible for the #abortionbans in several states. It’s true. Here are the facts. By the numbers, so use a number if you want to argue back:
1. The #ERA is the 28th amendment to the #Constitution but #Biden refuses to allow the National Archivist to publish it — at least not before the #midtermelections
2. Constitutional amendments require 3/4th of the states to approve an amendment. (See Article 5 in constitution). That’s 38 states. #Virginia was the 38th state to pass the #ERA in January 2020.
3. The #trump administration’s Attorney General Bill Barr issued a memorandum just days before VA’s legislature was on track to pass the ERA as the final state needed to make ERA the newest constitutional amendment. The Barr memo told the NA it was illegal to certify VA and add…
.. the ERA as the new amendment to the Constitution. The NA stopped as instructed bc it was clear he would be fired. The NA is an appointee approved by the Senate. Trump had no issue firing Comey or McCabe and Ferriero knew it. Ferriero waited til #Biden was in office to retire.

7. AG Garland issued a new opinion shifting the job back to Congress. None of this is right under the actual Constitution’s articles. But it sure delayed action, buying time for 2 things to happen: the #Dobbs case to be heard by the Supreme Court (2022) likely to overturn #Roe …

8. Midterms generally cost the sitting president’s party to lose a lot of senate and House seats. @POTUS and the @DNC counted on @Scotus’s conservatives to overturn #Roe. Instead of protecting Women’s rights by publishing #ERA , he blocked it - just like #Trump. #Abortion bans ..
… popped up in many red states with egregious penalties for women and medical professionals performing safe abortions. The gamble paid off for Democrats. Young women registered to vote in droves 3x more than young men over the summer and fall. Democrats now had #Abortion to help

9. #ERA was introduced to Congress in 1923 , ignored for 50 years until Michigan House Rep #Martha Griffith threatened to embarrass male house members if they didn’t act and vote on #ERA. archives.gov/legislative/fe…
In the end, it took some back room bullshit to get southern senators and house reps to vote to pass #ERA in Congress. That 💩 was adding a seven year deadline to cripple the amendment from reaching the needed 38 states to ratify in 7 years. It worked until it didn’t.
10. In 1978 Congress passed a 3-year deadline extension to 1982 after 35 states had ratified but were 3 states short of making #ERA part of the constitution. Then-president Jimmy Carter urged and signed the 3 yr extension as a symbolic gesture of support.
11. 1982 the deadline expired without 3 more states. Then in 2017, THE ONLY STATE with a female majority in its state legislature, Nevada ratified #ERA becoming the 36th state. npr.org/sections/thetw…
