One of the less-covered issues with regards to the #Yemen conflict, is how the #Iran-backed Houthis have carried out a systematic campaign of arrest and intimidation to muzzle any semblance of “opposition”
Those who have been tried received severe sentences, including death sentences. They face the prospect of torture in detention camps, and their families are often unaware of their fate.
Sheikh Jamal al-Maamari, who was arrested in 2015 and one of the few who made it out, shed light on what he called “death under the whip”
The extent of this practice is even wider than we know, since several activists and journalists are “forcibly disappeared”, recalling practice seen in #Syria
This year for instance, Bassem Abdul Karim al-Hobari, was "forcibly disappeared", with his fate unknown for several weeks.
Reports later emerged that he died after being tortured in #Houthi prisons.
Even those who expressed critical positions on the group on social media have been targeted as the #Houthi "political security department" effectively monitors social media.
Activist Majid Yassin was arrested last year for a post on his Facebook page.
The group has a track record of cracking down on women and limiting their freedom of movement. One of the most well-known cases was that of Intisar Al-Hammadi, who was often photographed without her Hijab.bbc.com/news/world-mid…
Intisar faced bogus accusations, and the #Houthi "prosecutor" threatened to carry out a "virginity test". She was sentenced to five years in prison, with some reports suggesting she tried to hang herself.
#Houthi decrees have also effectively limited the freedom of movement of Yemeni women, a practice denounce here for instance:
That's not to mention a growing crackdown on singers and musicians to enforce the group's narrow religious vision. In this video the group's fighters are seen raiding and stopping a wedding last year because music was being played.
This has become a trend with the group using a "law" banning loudspeakers after 10 pm to effectively crackdown on artists al-monitor.com/originals/2021…
Very little attention is paid to what the group does in the territory it controls, despite the fact that it still rules over the most populated areas of Yemen.
It's time to pay attention

Russian forces are blowing up several bridges in key areas of the #Kherson Province
Yesterday there were clashes Snihurivka, in the Mykolaiv Province, with some pro-Russian sources claiming the Russian army lost communication with the town
The head of the Mykolaiv regional administration also hinted at a Ukrainian offensive there yesterday
If you want to follow me on Telegram, I have opened a channel (have been planning to do so for a while) t.me/MichaelHorowitz
I have been meaning to use the ability to create longer form analysis on telegram as an addition to twitter - I will be posting a short update on #Ukraine in a bit
And no, I am not leaving twitter, though I can't say that this has nothing to do with concerns I have for the platform - a platform I personally love, for all of its faults, and the only social media I actually use.
🚩The Ukrainian General Staff is giving ground to claims that the Kherson evacuation may be aimed at baiting Ukrainian forces into launching an offensive >>
There's been many signs that Russia may be looking to withdraw from Kherson, but some Ukrainian officials are skeptical they will do so without a fight.
In one of its latest update the #Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian soldiers are wearing civilian clothes, occupying civilian buildings. This suggests they are preparing for an urban battle
Russian outlets claim that Ukraine fired six HIMARS rockets at the Nova Kakhovka dam, claiming that the dam has been damaged #Ukraine
Ukrainian authorities have long been concerned by the possibility that #Russia may seek to blow up the dam as it withdraws from Kherson
The Ukrainian southern command reported that it launched an attack yesterday against a military base in Kakhovka, claiming that the strike resulted in significant Russian casualties facebook.com/watch/?v=60183…
🚩A month ago, the truce expired in #Yemen due to inacceptable last-minute Houthi demands to have the salaries of members of their “government” and even “armed forces” be paid through oil revenues.
A thread 🧵
The truce lasted six-months and helped ease the humanitarian crisis in the country. Shipments of fuel increased, regular flights to and from Sana’a reopened
The Houthi on the other hand did not uphold their end of the bargain, failing to reopen roads to the city of #Taiz. A recent deadly road accident in the dangerous mountain roads near the city shows the price of such failure.
Saudi Arabia and the US are on high alert after a warning of a possible imminent Iranian attack wsj.com/articles/saudi…
This may seem like it comes out of nowhere, but it doesn't. #Iran may have several reasons to attack the Kingdom >>
#Iran (and its proxies in Iraq for instance) have often equated "jihadists" with Saudi Arabia. The recent #ISIS attack in Shiraz may encourage a "response" (despite the fact that Riyadh has nothing to do with the attack).
