ℹ️More background: on the eve of #COP27,a technical body established under #ParisAgreement released 1st recommendations to operationalise #CarbonTrading under #ParisAgreement after rushed negotiations.
The recommendation is marred with dangerous flaws.

🗣️Civil society coalitions expressed strong concerns as the recommendation:
🔻undermines #HumanRights safeguards
🔻threatens #ParisAgreement integrity & ambition
🔻opens door for dangerous technofixes while delaying #FossilFuels phaseout... 3/7
🗣️CSOs are concerned that the recommendation will incentivize projects with huge risks and impacts for Indigenous Peoples, local communities, enabling rich countries and corporations to avoid deep and rapid decarbonization 4/7
Earlier this week the🇺🇳 #UN SG @AntonioGuterres himself denounced bogus corporate schemes contributing to postponing phasing out of #fossilfuels. Yet #COP27 is packed with greenwashing announcements by rich govs. and corporate actors

🔥🙈#COP27 barely started & recommendations are already adopted that would seriously undermine the integrity of the #ParisAgreement
Last night, the supervisory body on #carbonmarkets finalised recommendations regarding "removals"

2/7 decision adopted in middle of night makes clear that Supervisory Body is pressing forward opening the door for a wide range of “removals” incl. engineering of the oceans to “offset” emissions despite the existence of an international moratorium prohibiting this
3/7 Despite the multiple cases of #HumanRights violations resulting from previous market-based “offsetting” schemes–the Supervisory Body suggest that enforcement of environmental and social safeguards shld remain a prerogative of host country–thus making any safeguards toothless
