I'm now joining the #NISOPlus23 session: "Making the business case for investing in metadata" with Josh Brown, Heather Kotula, Michelle Urberg, & Julia McDonell
#Metadata #MetadataMatters #NISOPlus sched.co/1D7pA
The opportunity costs of poor metadata re-use - Josh Brown from @MoreBrains_Coop
PIDs are keystone metadata! - Powering Reuse, Automation, Aggregation & Analysis
#metadata #NISOPlus23
NOT reusing #metadata has costs in money, time and knock-on effects - rekeying of metadata is essentially unnecessary duplication of effort across sectors, institutions and individuals! #NISOPlus23
Brown, Josh, Jones, Phill, Meadows, Alice, Murphy, Fiona, & Clayton, Paul. (2021). UK PID Consortium: Cost-Benefit Analysis (1.0). Zenodo. doi.org/10.5281/zenodo… #metadata #PIDs #NISOPlus23
Brown, Josh, Jones, Phill, Meadows, Alice, & Murphy, Fiona. (2022). Revised cost-benefit analysis for the UK PID Support Network (Version 1). Zenodo. doi.org/10.5281/zenodo… #metadata #PIDs #NISOPlus23
"nearly 55,000 person days, at a cost of £19 million, are wasted every year at UK institutions through the rekeying of metadata that should be automatically transferred between PID registries, and university and funder systems" #NISOPlus23
#NISOPlus23 #Metadata & #Taxonomies enable #KnowledgeStorage & #KnowledgeRetrieval
Saving time & money for the searcher == #TargetedKnowledge
Calculating #ROI for #metadata - we don't always have raw figures available... the return on investment or 'value' of an activity is not necessarily financial!
#NISOPlus23
Value can be measured through service improvement; a reduction in complaints/problems related to a service.
E.g. Investing in #metadata quality will 'make search better' which means less staff time will be needed to help the searcher find what they are looking for. #NISOPlus23
#Impact of #metadata for #ResearchOutputs - in this case #ResearchData -- Michelle Urberg
#NISOPlus23
Perspectives on #metadata for #ResearchOutputs - the value proposition of metadata for End Users, Researchers, Funders & Content Providers... from #ResourceDiscovery to #ResearchImpact and beyond...
#NISOPlus23 #MetadataMatters
Can the creators of #metadata for #ResearchOutputs learn from books metadata?
Testing end-user #discovery in Google Scholar - the importance of #DOIs #Creators #Titles #Subtitles #Subjects
#NISOPlus23
#Metadata considerations:
- What are your key outputs?
- Where is there friction preventing discovery?
- What metadata are you providing?
- What is missing from the pipeline?
- What data do *you* need to feed-back?
#NISOPlus23
- The experience of good #metadata is frictionless.
- When #metadata is doing its job, you will not see what it is doing #Invisible
- When done well, #metadata is part of a data-rich pipeline for everyone in the ecosystem
#MetadataTruths #MetadataMatters #NISOPlus23
Julia McDonnell from Oxford Uni Press - #Metadata are interwoven throughout publishing, research and modern life. #Metadata helps to contextualise and structure complex and disparate data and objects
#MetadataMatters #NisoPlus23
While essential, #metadata's contribution and complexity is easily overlooked - #metadata supports #discovery, #access and #impact in multiple environments, but it is largely #invisible
#MetadataMatters #NISOPlus23
#Metadata is crucial in ensuing #compliance (e.g. with funder mandates) and demonstrating #impact in an increasingly complex and content-rich environment #NisoPlus23
How to invest in #metadata ?
- Ensure it is #HighQuality #Structured follows #FAIRprinciples & is #portable.
- Invest in #DataGovernance ; #Expertise to #create, #collect, #store & #share metadata ; & in #consistency.
This takes resource & joint action.

@jesherer "No one talks about publishing as #OpenAccess causing declined usage or impact for monographs; in fact it is often the opposite!" #ScalingSmall #OABooks
@jesherer We need to get better at measuring usage & impact for #OABooks - this is tricky for libraries in particular; we rely on institution-specific usage stats to demonstrate value for money; how do we measure our institutional usage of #OpenAccess content?
#ScalingSmall
@jesherer We can get #OABooks usage stats based on IP-range; but this is just part of the picture - lots of usage is off-campus! If users don't go through authentication like EZproxy (because the content is open) how do we measure what institution they are affiliated to?

Pilot case to show that publishers can transition their business to new #OpenAccess models that do not rely on BPCs but on community funding.
Developing online open toolkits for starting & running open access presses #ScalingSmall #OABooks Image
@CEUPress and @LivUniPress made #OpeningtheFuture a reality! And libraries of all sizes have joined the membership scheme, enabling library funds to go further: achieving the dual objectives of increasing collections and supporting #OpenAccess.
#ScalingSmall #OABooks Image
Library members pay a small annual fee to get DRM-free, unlimited access to a publisher’s backlist; membership revenue is used to produce new frontlist monographs which are #OpenAccess to anyone in the world!
