Lifting other scholars up is such a powerful action in the quest to push against the type of academia we dislike. Promote *other* scholars.
Consistently, @maya_sen has been promoting up-and-coming early career political scientists (alongside @JohnHolbein1 and others too ❤️)
I saw my colleague (and recent hire) @sjleyg yesterday, and told her how happy we were that she joined @depCIDE - Sandra is a powerhouse
I love @CIDE_MX for many reasons, but one of them is that I have brilliant colleagues who are also wonderful friends. Makes life amazing.
Also, take risks (calculated if you must). Push for the kind of academia you want. In doing this, I admire @profmusgrave who does it always
Build others' skills (thank you @thosjleeper for all your contributions to #RStats) mentor others (thanks @sbmitche @jboxstef @smsaideman)
And after this early morning love and appreciation-fest, I *really* should jet to campus to teach my amazing @cide_lpp students (whom I ❤️)

Looking back on what my own students have needed for their theses in 2018, I know what I need to write in 2019: how do you move from having a vague question to reading to systematizing your literature review to refining your research question based on the literature to new RQ
Earlier this year I did a thread on research questions (read all responses, very useful).
My blog post on mapping a new field or body of literature should be helpful raulpacheco.org/2018/01/mappin… but the problem I find is that once the literature is mapped, students often find themselves bogged down in their reading. Their attention to ONE RQ wanes and want to do others.

This is a thread on goal-setting for graduate students using the tools I have developed, in response to Dr. @JaneLSumner 's request. More than a guide for my students, here's how I set my goals. In December, I plan my entire year (it's calendar year, more than academic year).
I used to do academic year but then I realized a lot of stuff isn't out (e.g. dates and locations) so I can't plan in August. My process looks like this raulpacheco.org/2016/12/my-yea… I recommend that my students do the same (plan their year). I have suggested they use Gantt charts.
So I wrote this guide raulpacheco.org/2018/10/planni… once they've figured out what they have to do per month, per semester, per year, THEN they can break down the work in smaller, workable, manageable pieces. raulpacheco.org/2016/05/my-dai… this still doesn't get to the SMART framework.

#Academia is brutal if you have anxiety &/or depression. I doubt I'm the only one falling apart at the end of a long year

Solidarity to everyone struggling with the remorseless criticism, crippling workload & systemic bullying. Hope you have a long & healing rest over Christmas
Academia harms mental health, & mental health harms academic performance. The two have become so difficult to separate that #HigherEd management can dismiss #MentalHealth problems as individual-level problems, due to 'overly sensitive' staff who can't cope.
But even if true - and academics are some unique brand of 'snowflakes' - what is done to help? Lunch time meditation? Resilience training? Visits from a 'therapy animal'? These are outrageously sticking-plaster solutions to a gaping wound.

I did something similar to this 5 years ago, in anticipation of EC & @theroots' Wise Up Ghost LP, on tumblr.

(You can still find all those posts if you look, although a lot of the YouTube links etc are now dead ends. It was 40 Days Of EC then, so for 2018 I'm upping it to 45.)
Mostly I will be going chronologically from the early years right up to the present, but it feels right to start out with Costello's 2002 song, "45."

Well, since the email went out to my department, I guess it is official.

This was my last semester working in Academia.

It's been a long time coming and the right decision for me and my family.
Next week I'll start a new adventure as a Quantitative Analyst, still here in Buffalo.

I'll miss my students. I'll miss my coworkers. I'll miss the great political science community.
But after a lot (A LOT) of soul-searching, pro-con lists, chats with my friends & family, and questioning whether I was doing the right thing; I'm sure this is the right move for me. #Academia is a fantastic place, but it isn't the place for me, anymore.

The new @latimes owner is moving the newsroom from its historic HQ to El Segundo.

I've been lucky enough to inhabit and explore the interlocking buildings at 1st and Spring for over a decade.

I'd like to share it with you. It's a beautiful day in #DTLA. Shall we take a wander?
The buildings wer constructed and built by the Chandler Family.

The different sections of the block have different cornerstones set by succeeding generations.
The lobby at 2nd and Spring with it's beautiful fixtures, including -30-, the traditional newspaper code for a story's end, hung over the exit.
