Looking back on what my own students have needed for their theses in 2018, I know what I need to write in 2019: how do you move from having a vague question to reading to systematizing your literature review to refining your research question based on the literature to new RQ
Earlier this year I did a thread on research questions (read all responses, very useful).
My blog post on mapping a new field or body of literature should be helpful raulpacheco.org/2018/01/mappin… but the problem I find is that once the literature is mapped, students often find themselves bogged down in their reading. Their attention to ONE RQ wanes and want to do others.

This is a thread on goal-setting for graduate students using the tools I have developed, in response to Dr. @JaneLSumner 's request. More than a guide for my students, here's how I set my goals. In December, I plan my entire year (it's calendar year, more than academic year).
I used to do academic year but then I realized a lot of stuff isn't out (e.g. dates and locations) so I can't plan in August. My process looks like this raulpacheco.org/2016/12/my-yea… I recommend that my students do the same (plan their year). I have suggested they use Gantt charts.
So I wrote this guide raulpacheco.org/2018/10/planni… once they've figured out what they have to do per month, per semester, per year, THEN they can break down the work in smaller, workable, manageable pieces. raulpacheco.org/2016/05/my-dai… this still doesn't get to the SMART framework.

I’m going to share a little story about why I never delete words and instead cut them from a paper and put them in a memorandum elsewhere. My PhD advisor wanted a lean dissertation. He made me cut TWO CHAPTERS out of the freaking book (I was not happy AT ALL). Then...
At my PhD defense, external examiners started asking questions I (a) knew the answer to because (b) they were answered in those two chapters. The final version had to include both. I was like.
To note: I’m not bitter with my former PhD advisor. He suggested doing what he thought best. He had no way to anticipate external examiners questions (I did because well, once you finish a dissertation you ARE the expert in this field/topic, and I was). That’s also a signal.

RBI revealed this in an RTI: At the end of March 2018, a record high 7,990 borrowers of above Rs 5 crore had not repaid a whopping Rs 3.71 lakh crore to banks for 1-30 days after due date. That is a four-year high record of early defaulters! 1/n
2/n. These early defaults rose by a record 281.9 per cent over December 2017 when they stood at only Rs 972 billion . On a year-on-year basis, the rise is almost 228 per cent - the highest growth of early stage overdue repayments in 4 years.
3/n. More than 5,000 of these 7,990 were new and unique early defaulters of loans above Rs 5 crore. What does this number tell us? We have been told that all bad loans are of UPA era. This number tells us that Modi govt might be brewing its own banking crisis as well.

THREAD. Read John Harwood article which says the voters who will decide the 2018 midterms haven't yet decided if Trump has been good for them or not. So here's some proof he's been bad for average Americans. If you know something good to add, just reply.
Let's start with Trump's protectionist tariffs. Here's a typical article written *before* Trump instituted the first of his tariffs (on steel and aluminum) which says "Its hard to find an economist who thinks this is a good idea." finance.yahoo.com/news/trump-doo…
The proposed tariffs were also opposed by most Democrats. Even if you only took into account the immediate effects, and not a possible trade war, the small number of jobs gained by tariffs would be dwarfed by the number of jobs lost in other industries.

I recently talked with graduate students in a seminar on #teaching practices in #HigherEducation about how to design and teach a course when you are not an expert on all of the content--which is really what most teaching is. Here are the main takeaways for those interested. 1/
In my experience, there are four main mistakes that novices often make when designing and teaching a course for the first time.

First, they approach the task by venturing off on their own into the wilderness of literature on all of the topics they don't know well. 2/
In other words, they prepare for course design as if it is a qualifying exam, attempting to become experts on all of the topics that the course will/should/must cover. 3/
