Five things I've learned (and you should know) about independent booksellers:
1.The people who work there are typically bookworms in the way people who work in record stores (stores that sell records) are audiophiles.
The workers in big box stores are more like popcorn dealers (dealers?) at movie theaters--they usually don't know much about the movies.
And that's no slight to popcorn dealers. But most likely it's a paycheck, not a passion.
2. They always have amazing staff picks because... see #1. And the index card reviews are like an entirely separate medium.
Someone should collect them. Hmmmm.
3. They benefit the community in multiple ways. Obviously as a bookstore but also as a community space. Don't believe me?
Show up for story time and have your mind blown. Bookstores transform into remote playrooms for kids! Reading Romp-A-Room!
4. They're some of the few spaces we have where you see minimal phone usage. I find that service is always shoddy in indie bookstores.
Perhaps that's the book gods sending a message. Consider your local bookstore the land of a billion text messages, for receiving only.
5. They're interesting to look at. Most of them are creative and interesting spaces thoughtfully planned out for the communities they serve.
They aren't stale waiting rooms, or off-putting classrooms. They appeal to the nerd in us, and the cool in us.
I also think that's why they always also sell the best ephemera. Seriously. Boutique shopping at its best!
Oh, and there's always an opportunity to spark conversation simply by saying this: "I love your glasses. Where'd you get those?"
Trust me on that one.
