I could not fit this in to my post today, but I am curious what role, if any, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s played in the FBI decision to open a CI investigation of Trump after he fired Comey, based on the president’s perceived threats to national security. 1/
The reported sequence of events is odd. @gregpmiller reports in The Apprentice that on May 8, 2017, “there was a Comey-bashing session” in the Oval Office with the president and other top officials “in which nearly everyone—including Rosenstein—participated with enthusiasm.” 2/
According to Miller, the President then announced, with Rosenstein in the room, that he had decided to fire Comey, and he included as a reason his frustration with the Russia probe. Miller suggests dimly that there was concern in the room about POTUS' Russia rationale. 3/

From a constitutional perspective, it’s amazing that POTUS decides on his own judgment, or whim, whether and how to go in to Syria and whether and how to leave, and everything else about the sprawling global war against IS and AQ, and associates, and associates of associates, etc
Our 17-year war is entirely under control of POTUS. Congress authorized a relatively narrow use of force on 9/14/01 & has appropriated & hand-waived ever since while presidents—Bush, Obama, Trump—have determined practically everything else.
Eg: Heavy footprint in Afghan. and Iraq, plus surge; light footprint in Iraq and Afghanistan plus expanded drones; expanding war geographically to many nations; expand to associates and their associates; expanding to ISIS; expand to Syria; leave Syria; when/how to use cyber; etc.

This extraordinarily honest and insightful essay by @samuelmoyn is a must-read for law students and especially law professors and law school deans. It is a fundamental critique of the role of law schools in American society in less than 2500 words. chronicle.com/article/Law-Sc…
The piece is addressed to progressives who dominate law school culture. It criticizes court-centrism and the sharp clinical turn in law schools, and chides super elite-seeking law students who complain about the elitism of their institutions, which aim to perpetuate elitism.
Sam’s primary prescription, with details in the essay: “[L]aw schools will need to consider how to reset their missions for those students no longer able to suspend disbelief about how their ideals and their training fit together.”

When propaganda fails.

1. This last week stood as a low point for me in the ongoing Russian attack on the West and specifically America. I was frustrated to the point of wanting to exit social media all together.
2. I saw friends go at each other on social media. I saw @POTUS approval rating remain within points of his usual low approval range. vox.com/policy-and-pol…
3. I did a search for the word “infighting” in a variety of language and saw that it isn’t just in America. It isn’t just on the left or right. Social media infighting is everywhere and being spurred on by bad actors. It all felt very overwhelming.

This just in: Ali Watkin's own bosses at the NYT's do not buy her story that James Wolfe was never a source for any of the stories she got while covering the nat sec beat at the US Senate.

“For a reporter to have an intimate relationship with someone he or she covers is unacceptable,” says executive editor Dean Baquet

Watkins defense was that while she was in a sexual relationship with Wolfe, she assured her editors she NEVER used him as a source for her articles
I have to admit I'm pretty amazed Watkins was fired outright.

As NYT's executive editor Dean Baquet notes, her conduct here was a "violat[ion of] our written standards and the norms of journalism.”

Then she compounded that violation by lying to her bosses about it.

2/ Three months before the 2016 election, a group gathered at Trump Tower to meet w Don Trump Jr: an Israeli specialist in social media manipulation, an emissary for 2 wealthy Arab princes, and Erik Prince. The meeting was convened to offer help the Trump team win the election.
3/ Erik Prince arranged the meeting, which took place on Aug. 3, 2016. The emissary, George Nader, told Don Jr. that the crown princes who led Saudi Arabia and UAE were eager to help his father win election.
