1) In 1998 I was frustrated with the representation in the state legislature I was 25 and decided to run for office. I had a clipboard and a homemade brochure.
2) Most people thought I had very little chance and they were right. But I knocked on every door in the district four times. Through the process, hundreds started to help me.
3) I ended up winning by 427 votes with the help of family friends and volunteers, and eventually donors.
4) But I had never worked on the Hill, or at the legislature, and I didn’t even know what offramp to take to get to the state Capitol.
5) My point is that YOU should run for office. The American experiment is about self government, and that means regular people get angry and become elected leaders. 2018 is the time for that.
