Watching the PMLN capitulate on FATA reforms once again, reminds one of the fickle and inward nature of the Sharif brand.
And no this isn’t the first time they’ve initially accommodated reasonable demands by peripheral groups only to leave them in the lurch.
Pretty much par for the course going back as far as 1989.
It follows a predictable course.
The Sharifs come across as humble, not very bright but sincere to the peripheral..meaning non Punjabi (often single issue)groups. They are seen as national leaders, lacking the “feudal” haughtiness of the PPP or hyperbolic self righteousness
of PTI or in days past the JI.
But when push comes to shove the Sharifs realise that these issues mean redistribution of power and perhaps them losing a few crumbs of power.
The discussion gets shelved or watered down to the point where it becomes a joke.
The issue is simple in the sharif eyes.. the disputes are for them just a question of how big a slice of cake one side wants.
No big deal, hence why it is negotiable.
They don’t get that for single issue groups like anti FCR ones..
The issue is they’ve never tasted cake.
‘I am hungry, you’ve food in your belly
I am naked, you are clothed
I am homeless and you have a home
How can we have the same view of life?’
I will caveat all this by saying PMLN has at times made some brave decisions like over KP royalty, water sharing. But each time it was when their hand was forced.
