The incentives for organizations and their programmers are not aligned.

Work harder: be exploited
Work smarter: exploit others

Many (not all) organizations are pathological. Success is found in politics/manipulation/bullshit, not technical/useful/constructive work.

Success = incentives = feedback loop of resource allocation…
In pathological organizations, people are not selected or promoted by their merits, but strategically as allies in a greater kakonomic environment, to capture the value created by others (internal or external to the organization). Bullshit fills the gaps.…
In pathological organizations bullshitters take the merit/credit, the incentives, promotions, bonuses,… get more resources, grow,…

Hard workers take the blame, unpaid overtime, reprimands, stagnate, burnout,…

Incredible that still anything gets done.

In pathological orgs there's a huge leap in every aspect, becoming a manager.

The org incentivizes selfish individuals that may cause harm to the org, while the ones paying attention to work for common/org good only get more work.
