So, yesterday I got the spewing insults by explicit Comicsgators who openly said that being political was anti-customer and not folding to insults was anti-customer.

Today, I have the wave of people saying “No, that’s not what Comicsgate is about!"
Strangely, too many of their messages go on to argue that bad comics are political and therefore anti-customer, and that pros who didn’t just obey when barraged with insults are appalling people for not just taking it — sometimes for years — with a smile.
One of them insisted that nobody read PERSEPOLIS, MAUS, TRANSMETROPOLITAN or X-MEN: GOD LOVES, MAN KILLS.
So no offense meant, folks, but when you insist that what the Comicsgators are about is something other than what they’re saying or doing, I’m unconvinced.

I read a comic today where I liked the writing, liked the art, liked the premise and the plot, but something wasn’t quite clicking, and then I figured out what it was:
The writer was writing the book as if he expected the artist to take charge of the pacing, and the artist was drawing it as if he was expecting the writer to do it.

The result was, a lot of the scenes felt vague, unfocused.
The artist is like the director/cameraman, choosing how to tell the story visually. If a scene ends on a moment of emotional isolation that the reader is meant to pause on, a camera move — pulling back, zooming in — can make you feel it more.

Another thing about writing fill-ins (back when that was more of a thing). You had to be ready to go.

If someone offered you a gig, you couldn’t spend a week coming up with a really great idea. They needed it now. Usually, anyway.
I got offered JLA #231-232 because @gerryconway, the regular writer, didn’t want to do the JLA/JSA crossover that year (most of the characters were tied up in a plotline on Mars, anyway), so the editor, Alan Gold, had to find someone else to do it.
He’d offered it to a number of writers, and they’d all said no. Not enough time, and those stories were a headache to write, anyway. Plus, most of the JSA was unavailable, too, due to a storyline going on in INFINITY INC.

Just in case anyone’s actually interested (and pro artists, feel free to weigh in), here’s a few thoughts on the decline in the ubiquity of inkers in mainstream comics:
1. Used to be, back in the 40-80s or so, mainstream comics pencilers penciled fairly loosely. Complete pencils, sure, but pencil textures, not ink textures. And inkers would finish the art for clean reproduction.

That got the jobs done faster. Penciler go fast, inker finish.
2. But as we got a wave of fans-turned-artist in the late 60s onward, and then another wave, and then another, pencils started tightening up.

Artists were learning to draw comics by looking at finished art and duplicating it in pencil, doing the “finish” in pencil.

Yesterday, I upset the cultists/cranks for suggesting that Corbyn's support for political violence was/is wrong.

Here's why it is wrong, by the late, great, Bernard Levin.

After an SWP office suffered an arson attack (by the NF) they wrote "The Socialist Workers' Party has been in the forefront of trying to stop these vile people. We have on many occasion been successful. These frustrated thugs have now resorted to violence"
'Credulity must make a stand. For there is no other possible meaning to that passage other than the SWP is saying that violence in pursuit of political ends is wrong. Now that is certainly what I believe [me too] and I believe it to be what most people in this country believe.'

People hate being called racist, antisemitic, Islamophobic, homophobic, xenophobic etc. Not just because they’re afraid of being labeled that way, but because they truly don’t want to think they are.

That means they’ll do anything to hide those feelings from themselves.
This is why our discourse around hate is so confused.

We think people *must* be consciously aware of their racism *and* open about it to be racist.
But most people are neither. Not just that, they’re horrified that they might be, especially since there’s probably a part of them whispering that they might be.

Most people who defended things like segregation and who support the Muslim ban refused to believe they were racist.

#Today's story to #EndFamilySeparation Four months ago, Dad and 4-month-old entered at the Texas/Mexico border and requested #asylum. Dad and child were immediately separated and the baby put in ORR custody. #FamiliesBelongTogether
Dad was detained in a #Texas detention center where @RAICESTEXAS consulted. Dad accepted a deportation to be quickly reunited w/ his infant child. However, the Dad was deported & NOT his child. The now 8-month-old baby has been in ORR custody for 4 months. #EndFamilySeparation
The Mom and Dad now have once weekly Skype calls with their 8-month-old baby. That's right, folks. They Skype with an infant. #EndFamilySeparation #FamiliesBelongTogether

I'm at Water's Edge Brewery in Lake Ridge, Virginia tonight. Six of the seven VA House of Delegates seats here are held by Republicans. Tonight, that may change wildly.
Those seats in Prince William County, Virginia's second most populous, are a test of the anti-Trump grassroots movements spurred on by the Democratic party and progressive groups.
Of 8 groups, like @MoveOn, @BoldProgressive and @TheDLCC, that made endorsements in VA House races, 41% of their endorsements came to six Democrats challenging Republican incumbents in this county.
