20 things to think about regarding your wildlife-friendly landscape:
1. Retaining leaf litter for overwintering arthropods
2. Native host plants according to Dr. Tallamy's list
3. Seamless sequence of blooms for pollinators....
4. Diversity of flower shapes to accommodate insects with different mouth morphology
5. Some areas of bare soil (no mulch) for ground nesting bees
6. Focus on early and late-blooming plants for benefit of pollinators
7. Layered planting providing habitat and cover to wide range
8. Brush pile for birds and small mammals
9. Garden cleanup delayed until several consecutive days in 50's till emergence of insects. If cleaned up early, leave 6-8" of stems showing and arrange cuttings loosely on compost pile so creatures living in hollow stems can still emerge
10. Ground cover plants to reduce the need for mulch (which can be hard for ground nesting species to dig through)
11. Water source that is kept thawed over the winter
12. Trees that produce nuts for birds like Blue Jays
13. Shrubs (native, of course) with berries for birds
14. Grasses and perennials that provide winter forage for birds
15. Less pesticide use
16. Reduction in lawn size
17. Bird houses for cavity nesting birds
18. Tree snags for hungry Woodpeckers
19. Down trees left in place to support decomposing insect food web and recycling of nutrients
20. Removal/Management of invasive species....
