From a USAF CMSgt (ret) I highly respect and knew:

Well, once again the left is using a tragedy to their advantage. More denouncing the second amendment. More calls for gun control. More angry noise. OK, here are the facts in the tragedy in which 17 students were slaughtered.
1. It was already illegal for that student to have that gun in his possession.
2. It was already illegal for him to carry the gun on school grounds because the school is a "Gun Free Zone."
3. It was already illegal for him to discharge the gun in a public place.
4. It was already illegal for him to shoot people with that gun.
So, everything he did was not only "controlled" to include the weapon he was carrying ... it was illegal. So what do we do? Make it more illegal? Can't get more illegal than murder.
Make the punishment more harsh? Can't get more harsh than the death penalty. Make guns illegal? It was already illegal for him to have that gun. So what's the answer? I have some suggestions.
1. Get rid of public gun free zones. All they do is encourage the crazies to attack a place where they are sure they won't face any armed opposition.
2. Make it optional for teachers to carry guns to school and provide free training to any teacher who chooses to do so.
3. Hire armed guards at every school. For those of you who are tempted to say "I don't want my kid going to a school with armed guards" ... shut the hell up. The alternative of a dead child is unacceptable. If you don't like my answer, unfriend me.
4. Make it mandatory for every school to practice evacuation procedures and defensive measures monthly or quarterly against this specific threat. Not some tired-ass fire drill.
But a real, quarterly drill with tactics and evasive techniques taught by professionals. This includes training a cadre of armed teachers to act as first responders.
Or ... OR ... we can continue to get mad and scream gun control. Which would have done nothing to stop this tragedy or mitigate the damage and losses. So, we can take the initiative and take actions that absolutely will make a difference.
They won't stop all school shooting but they'll stop some and they'll absolutely minimize the damage. Imagine for a moment if just 5 of the teachers in the school in Florida had been trained and were carrying their weapons. Along with 3 or 4 trained and armed security personnel.
Do you honestly think 17 kids would have been killed. How many of their lives could we have saved? One? Five? Eight? Twelve? Who knows? As it was they hid under their desks and hoped to God he didn't target them. That's not a plan. That is the lack of a plan.
Or ... we can keep doing what we're doing and make the gun used in this action even more illegal. And we could even say if someone does it again we're going to get even madder.
Impotent rage and more gun control haven't worked so far but hey, it makes us feel like we're "right" and that's what's important. Right?
Of course, I'm sure I'm just pissing in the wind. There is absolutely zero chance, I repeat ... zero chance ... that my suggestions will even get a moment of serious consideration.
We'll all just pound our chests and gnash our teeth and the anti-gun crowd will screech like scalded cats ... and our children will sit in buildings like sheep waiting for wolves ...
waiting for the next instance when the worst of humanity walks in unopposed to another gun free zone and starts another slaughter. I'm out.

Adding some more thoughts from a wise independent I know from FB:
Where do you begin with all that is wrong - he was a problem at school, made threats, disallowed from wearing a backpack to school due to threats he’d made and eventually expelled from the school. How did he get on campus? How did he get inside? How did he get to the third floor?
He supposedly shot his way in but the armed guard failed to stop his entry.

He actually exited the school with the students evacuated.

Where did he get the gun and how - legally or other?

Described, again as odd, weird, trouble, obsessed with guns.
What went wrong - everything.

Bottom line public schools need to be better secured. Fenced campuses, locked doors, armed police and staff on campus.
Personally I wouldn’t send my children to a public school as they exist today. The kids are strangers, there exist little sense of community and moral decency is an ambiguous term pop culture defines.
