4 previous World Values Surveys had found support for a “strong leader” progressively increased among younger cohorts of voters. 2017 findings, however, show this trend has reversed (again, possibly Trump-related)
Preferences for "strong leader"/democracy by educational attainment:
More than 40% of those who think European heritage is very or fairly important to being an American are supportive of a “strong leader” — fully 4x proportion who say European heritage is “not at all important.”

On @NewDay, Stephen Moore - who suggested low interest rates were going to result in hyperinflation during the financial crisis - claimed that the Fed must keep rates low today, during a “boom,” because we’re experiencing “deflation.” I have...no idea what he’s talking about.
Deflation means prices are going *down.* They are not. Inflation is modest, but it is not negative by any measure. Here’s core PCE (Fed’s preferred inflation measure), % change year-over-year.

A seeming paradox about Trump and immigration:

1. Overall, immigration has never been more popular in the last 30 years of American polling.
2. Trump’s brazenly anti-immigrant rhetoric made him president.

What could explain this paradox? Salience.

72 percent of Trump voters said immigration was very important issue in 2016, compared to just 36 percent of Democrats. A two-to-one margin.

In summary, you could say that 2016/7 America was divided between a majority of relatively pro-immigrant voters, mostly with other policy priorities; and a minority of Trump supporters whose anti-immigration stance was a priority.

The research debunked the "Left Behind" thesis: the likelihood of voting for Trump was *not* affected by real or perceived deterioration in one's financial situation (loss of job or income between 2012 and 2016; harm from foreign trade; unemployment etc)
Dr. Mutz reviewed other data, including National Opinion Research Center (University of Chicago) surveys, that supported this finding: anxieties about retirement, education and medical bills had little impact on whether a person supported Trump.
