Do you know why African-Americans align with so many COVID-19 co-morbidities? Structural racism. Food deserts=unequal access to healthy & fresh foods= diabetes, heart disease. Enviro injustices mean dirty air, water. Greed & neglect, subpar housing=asthma
Do you know that grocery stores use #census tracts to determine where they should open? Black, Latinx, AAPI, Native & Indigenous communities rank as the most undercounted & in turn are under resourced by the federal govt=cycle of intergenerational poverty & poor health outcomes.
RIP my mentions w/all of the victim blaming re: disproportionate COVID-19 deaths in the Black community. No one is playing victim (we are resilient) or the "race card". Your willful ignorance is exhausting. Systemic oppression thru structural racism is real.

🚨ICYMI: Speaker Pelosi was in a familiar role again – the adult handling another complex web of urgent issues #ForThePeople.

Stepping up to deliver on resources and game plan to fight the #coronavirus, she also slammed Republicans and Facebook for sabotaging our #census.

#CA12
As concern grew about whether the administration was prioritizing evidence-based policy and transparency with the public, the House came together w/ the Speaker's incredible leadership to pass a bipartisan bill that brings order and resources to this difficult task. #coronavirus
With challenges of this scope, taking care of immediate needs is only the beginning.

Mindful of any collateral impact on many aspects of life #ForThePeople, Speaker Pelosi put issues of health worker safety, unemployment insurance & business losses on the WH radar. #coronavirus

The National Population Register (NPR) is a Register of usual residents of the country.

#NPRForIndia
NPR is being prepared at the local (Village/sub-Town), sub-District, District, State and National level under provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

#NPRForIndia
The objective of the NPR is to create a comprehensive identity database of every usual resident in the country. The data for National Population Register was collected in 2010 along-with the house-listing phase of Census of India 2011.

A frightening dilemma looms for India's minorities, especially her Muslims. It is the upcoming @Census2021India. @PrakashJavdekar has stated that it will be a chance both the enumerate the population AND to populate/update the National Population Register - #NPR. So? you may ask.
Well, here's the rub. The #NPR will be a register of #residents. The National Citizens register will draw on it to establish #Citizenship status on criteria yet to be announced, confirmed and clarified. The #Census and #NPR will be based at least on the foll. data set.
That was the data set used for @censusIndia2011. In the first instance the expectation is that the data will be honestly filled in and submitted via an app. (I heard @PrakashJavdekar say that in a #PresConference on @NDTV.) Here's the dilemma

THREAD: Russian hacks, cost overruns and advice that went unheeded: Here is what I found over 6 months spent investigating the @USCensusBureau’s $5B push to bring the #2020Census online (reut.rs/35ZuLLU) (1/13)
@uscensusbureau The Census Bureau is spending $5B to modernize the 2020 census. For the first time, most of you will respond on the internet, rather than via snail mail. But the complex IT system being used is rife with problems (2/13)
@uscensusbureau During testing in 2018, hackers with Russian IP addresses were able to access #Census servers they shouldn’t have been able to access, sources tell us. To be clear, there’s no record of data being stolen (3/13)

In this morning's release on income, poverty, and health insurance for 2018, the Census Bureau data reveal that income growth once again slowed significantly in 2018.
census.gov/newsroom/press…
1/n
Household income growth significantly slowed again in 2018, following a marked deceleration in 2017. While any reduction in poverty or increase in income is a step in the right direction, most families have just barely made up the ground lost over the past decade.
2/n
Income growth slows significantly again in 2018.

Median household incomes rose only 0.9% in 2018, compared with 1.8% in 2017. In 2016 and 2015, median household incomes grew much faster, at 3.1% and 5.1%, respectively.

Look at this significant slowdown!

#THREAD: From Justice Thomas' #census dissent ⤵

"For the first time ever, the Court invalidates agency action solely because the it questions the sincerity of the agency's otherwise adequate rationale."
"It is not difficult for political opponents of executive actions to generate controversy with accusations of pretext, deceit, and illicit motives."
"Crediting these accusations on evidence as thin as the evidence here could lead judicial review of administrative proceedings to devolve into an endless morass of discovery and policy disputes not contemplated by the Administrative Procedure Act.”

Barbara Underwood FTW!

It was such a privilege to get to play a small role in this case when I was at the NYAG’s office - and I’m in awe of the brilliant legal team that beat back this incredibly wrongheaded policy. #Census2020
Holy crap, the federal government is printing the #Census without the citizenship question. This is no longer a tentative win, it’s a full win. !!!
15 months ago, the NY AG’s office + partners filed suit against the Trump administration over its plan to demand citizenship status on the #Census2020. This @GettyImages pic was taken just before our presser announcing the suit.

And now it's over. Democracy won. How about that.

6 years ago today, the Supreme Court’s Shelby County decision gutted the #VotingRightsAct. Several states then rushed to impose new discriminatory restrictions on voting. The right to vote is fundamental. We should be making it easier, not harder, to take part in our democracy.
Both the Supreme Court and our democracy face a similar test today: whether to allow a citizenship question on the #Census. The Trump administration has blatantly misrepresented the partisan origins of the question—to increase Republican voting power. oversight.house.gov/sites/democrat…
That includes Commerce Secretary Ross, who falsely & inexcusably claimed DOJ is “the one” that asked for the question when I questioned him during a Senate hearing.

Kris Kobach’s #Crosscheck voter purge program is inherently racist. Under the guise of catching so-called double voters, it crudely matches the first and last names of voters across states. kboo.fm/media/72437-gr… #VoterSuppression #ElectionFraud
U.S. Census data shows that minorities are overrepresented in 85 of 100 of the most common last names. rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
And now #KrisKobach is trying to add a citizenship question to the US #Census2020 that could result in even more legal minority voters being illegally purged from the rolls and/or deterred from voting. gregpalast.com/kris-kobachs-b… #InterstateCrosscheck #Census #VoterSuppression

Deputy City Attorney Erin Kuka here. I took over my office’s account today! (Thx, Dennis!)

It’s a big day bc our case re the 2020 census is at the U.S. Supreme Court! I’ve been on the case since day 1, and today I’ll tell you everything you need to know. #Census2020 #SCOTUS
First, what’s happening today? We’re in a coalition that banded together to fight injustice. Barbara Underwood from @NewYorkStateAG and @dale_e_ho from @ACLU are arguing for all of us.
No cameras or phones are allowed in the Supreme Court, but SCOTUS will release a transcript later today—I’ll post as soon as it’s out. #HittingRefreshAllMorning #Patience

Hey, guess what happens tomorrow? Supreme Court hearing on whether 2020 federal census form can include a question asking whether each member of a household is a US citizen.

Department of Commerce, et al., Petitioners v. New York, et al.

supremecourt.gov
U.S. Code: Title 13. CENSUS

Department of Commerce v. New York

How this is even an issue is beyond me. Clearly the only people against asking if every US person is a US citizen are those aiding & abetting for ILLEGAL aliens aka criminals..

Only in U.S. is it controversial to have a citizenship question on the #census—one we’ve had consistently since 1820 (and census still asks it today on the annual American Community Survey): dailysign.al/2Dmw2kU

Barbara Underwood will get to argue #Census2020 before #SCOTUS after all. Can’t wait.
This case is so important, and would get so much more attention in normal times. Demanding citizenship status on the #Census would lead to major undercounts in immigrant-rich states like NY, jeopardizing billions in federal $ & fair representation in Congress & Electoral College.
Also, a reminder for the xenophobes: the U.S. Constitution (yes, that one) requires an “actual Enumeration” of all people living in the United States, whether they are citizens or not.

#BREAKING #2020Census news:

A federal judge just granted @NewYorkStateAG Underwood's motion to depose Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. This is part of the AG's lawsuit over the Trump administration's decision to demand citizenship info on the #Census.
In granting @NewYorkStateAG Underwood’s motion to depose Ross, the federal judge writes, “the question is not a close one: Secretary Ross must sit for a deposition because, among other things, his intent and credibility are directly at issue in these cases.” #2020census

I found records of interracial marriages between Cherokee women and African men where the census taker changed the wife's ethnicity to Negro after the marriage.

In changing the ethnicity of the Indigenous Woman, the census-taker effectively reduced her status from 2nd class citizen (within the new United States of course) to non-existent.
