The first population #census in North America was performed in 1665-6 by Jean Talon (“Canada’s first official statistician”) 🇫🇷. He was appointed by Louis XIV of France to improve the management of French colonies in what is now 🇨🇦. 1/ 
2/ He needed to measure the population to “gauge the progress of European colonization” & implement policies to diversify the economy & strengthen governance.
3/The census occurred during a hard winter, which actually was an advantage as most people had to stay home & could not travel. Talon proudly reported 3,418 people in total. However, there were many omissions -accidental & otherwise - duplications, & mistakes in adding up.

1. Another question I constantly get: Can Chinese data be trusted? High Frequency data shop like Baidu or other private data source advertise their data showing similar thing as govt economic data, but more real time = acknowledgement of recent higher quality govt economic data.
2. Around 2014, the central government was extremely concerned that several northern provinces’ reported GDP numbers were overinflated by local officials. In 2016, the LiaoNing province in the north was asked to reduce its reported GDP figure by 22.4%.

After historically fast growth in May and June, July's jobs report is sure to disappoint. Because so many jobs were lost in March and April, the economy remains 14.7 million jobs short, and a full recovery even with rapid growth is many months away.
