Just recalling the times I've been told I wasn't suited for academia. 1. If you're not succeeding with job/postdoctoral applications, maybe you just can't cut it.
2. Don't bother applying for the job you're currently doing when it's advertised, you're a poor academic. (This one hurt a lot as a dear friend said it). PS I did and got the job.
3. My academic supervisor in said job in performance review: if you're struggling, perhaps you're just not suited to academic life. Let's re-assess your feelings at next review. (No offer of support, or words of support).
This last has made me super-wary of asking for help or admitting that all is not rosy. Like when I lost a lot of time due to death in family, and this was attributed to my poor assessment methods. (Needless to say it wasn't).
