This is not a favourite as he fails to acknowledge feminist scholarship, but Jack Holland's A Brief History of Misogyny is a good starting place for STEM colleagues who don't believe it exists. goodreads.com/book/show/5976…
It's not uncommon to find a male STEM colleague who is all for getting more women into science, but doesn't have any understanding of the theory, history or practice of feminism.

Two things I'll never forget. Arriving in Dublin, first visit to the land my ancestors fled post-Famine. An elderly priest and nun walked up and down the median strip, nun saying the Rosary, priest carrying anti-abortion placard.
On a bus in Sydney, pro-life march walking in street. Elderly women on bus gets v angry. Shouts about how her backyard abortion in her youth nearly killed her, the terror and poverty of a pregnant teenage girl, how dare those sanctimonious bastards judge her.
Everyone in bus looks away, tries to ignore the embarrassing mad woman. I'm young and not brave enough to speak (I wish I had been) but I look at her directly and listen. She's bottled this up for years. She has to speak her fear and anger.

Just recalling the times I've been told I wasn't suited for academia. 1. If you're not succeeding with job/postdoctoral applications, maybe you just can't cut it.
2. Don't bother applying for the job you're currently doing when it's advertised, you're a poor academic. (This one hurt a lot as a dear friend said it). PS I did and got the job.
3. My academic supervisor in said job in performance review: if you're struggling, perhaps you're just not suited to academic life. Let's re-assess your feelings at next review. (No offer of support, or words of support).

1/ Amid Twitter maybe getting rid of the "like" to promote "better dialog" and certainly giving safe haven to nazis and other extremists, a rant:
2/ You probably noticed how, people came forward to say that they'd reported the bomber for violent threats, and Twitter (as always) did nothing and (as always) now apologizes but (as always) won't say how they'll better handle. They won't, and I'll tell you one big reason why.
3/ to address complaints about threats and "improve the dialog" Twitter introduced the "quality filter." You see fewer threats and hate speech. BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THERE'S LESS OF IT.

1/ I finished @nntaleb's new #book Skin in the game, and here are my learnings, insights and notes.

Warning: this thread is going to be huge.
2/ Human systems are systems within systems, interacting in complex ways. No article / paper / logic can capture all interactions of such systems and their evolution over a non-trivial amount of time.

So fear one shot, large scale interventions (such as invasions, UBI, CRISPR)
3/ People with fuck you money should call out famous or powerful people when they are wrong

Greetings from the @FLSenate, where they'll be voting out their bill in response to the #StonemanDouglas shooting today. That's after a rare Saturday session to amend the bill.

The Stoneman Douglas bill will not be voted on till the afternoon, so sit tight if you're curious about that vote. In the meantime, this morning they'll be taking up HB7055, the big education bill.
