I've been watching/reading a lot of True Crime murder stuff lately, which reminds me of a story. A weird and awful story, so, be warned.
In high school I worked for a mom & pop store in a 1-streetlight town surrounded by woods & farmland. Only one other teen worked there (H) so we often worked together after school. ~3pm to close.
H went to high school in that town so her classmates would swing by to chat with us on long, slow nights, in their camo & Carhartt.
One classmate was Billy, a hulking kid who seemed a little slow and would just hang out at the counter drinking coffee, chewing Skoal, staring. We joked that he had a crush on us.
Sometimes he was there when I closed the store alone, just quietly standing at the counter staring. I felt bad for him and always went out of my way to be nice to him. Then I'd close and bike home in the dark.
Senior year I quit to go waitress at a restaurant elsewhere. But it's a small town and that spring I hear the news: Billy strangled a 10-year old girl to death and dumped her body a mile away from the store.
I mostly forgot about all this so tonight I checked to see if it happened like I remembered. It did. nytimes.com/1998/04/21/nyr…
Anyway, no grand moral, here. Just a fucked up thing I remembered while watching Mindhunter.
