I DID NOT BLOCK THE HOT TAKES MAN

I did not block the Hot Takes man
So he kindly Tweeted me—
And told me why my generation
was fucked financially

He spoke of toast, avocado waste
How lattes were our curse
Our savings plans for 35
In truth could not be worse

But Hot Takes man took systemic faults
For tests of individual merit

He emphasized our laziness
Our ignorance of 401Ks
So fuck it, I blocked the Hot Takes man
And kept looking for work that pays.

Worldbuilding! A term with a lot of baggage. A craft and a theory that causes headaches for creators at every experience level. A dirty word to some, but only, I would argue, because we too often misapprehend what it can mean.

Worldbuilding is just a hook on a belt.
Worldbuilding has a dread reputation as an act of homework, an act of self-entombment under tons of trivia. An act of penance! First the creator suffers! Then the audience is made to suffer! Everyone involved must prove their worthiness in the NERDLORE CRUCIBLE!

What a crock.

I fell hard for Harlan Ellison stories as a teenager. Not an uncommon thing. I scoured my high school library for anything with his name on it, then hunted places like Uncle Hugo's. If you wanted Ellison you had to learn a new love for used copies, yellowing pages, torn covers.
His publication history was as patchwork and chimerical as his reputation. He was world-famous, he was obscure. He was ubiquitous, he was a distant fluttering heat mirage. He was an angel, he was a sentient hemorrhoid. He was impossible to work with, he was the Pro of Pros.
When I was hunting his stuff, in the hazy pre-eBay paleolithic, it seemed like God's own shotgun blasted his work out to the bookstores of the world at random intervals, to no discernible ballistic pattern.

This is a thread. Part 3/a big question mark.

One last essential clarification, re. my previous thread, in which I am going to tell you something about myself that nobody is strictly entitled to know. But engaging with me on that subject was hard for many people for many reasons-- (1 of OH GOD HE'S DOING IT AGAIN)
And I'm going to try to meet that hard work with further transparency on my own part. Here goes:

Nothing I wrote disclaimed the possibility of hiring readers for any purpose to do analysis of any or all of the manuscript. (2 of a molehill)
Nobody is reading scenes from TTOE out of context right now because nobody is reading scenes from TTOE right now, period.

This is the anxiety condition I have referenced in public discussion of my depression and anxiety. This is its specific manifestation. (3 of an exposition)
