It's a Friday afternoon and I'm actively procrastinating, so here goes: Everything I've Learned about Networking in a Virtual World. A thread from an introvert's perspective. (1/) Image I have a lot of conversations with students and young professionals starting out in #water, #sustainability, and #SciComm. From my admittedly unscientific sampling, #networking is a word that tends to carry negative associations. (2/)

This week, Jordan Peterson published a commentary in the National Post. In it, he defends the scientific journal Angewandte Chemie and researcher Tomas Hudlicky for an essay published earlier this year that spoke out against diversity in science. Here's why Peterson is wrong: 1/6 Peterson says: "Hudlicky voiced a smattering of opinions deemed unacceptable by that small number of people who both read his submission and were somewhat active on Twitter." Let's flip that. Scientific institutions/journals have not historically been leaders on diversity. 2/6

It's tough to watch #COVID2019 unfold and know that I can't offer much more help than just staying home. But I can (and will!) keep sharing jobs and opportunities in a time of economic uncertainty. To make things easier, I'll share any opportunities I find in this thread: Applications are now open for @YorkUScience's Science Communicator in Residence Program for 2020-21. Another weekend, another ✈️. This time - Toronto! There’s a kid in the airport singing “this is the song that never ends” at the top of his lungs. This is gonna be a long night.

On June 20th, the Canadian Senate passed Bill C-69, extending protection of navigable waterways in Canada. Here’s a quick overview of some of the changes, courtesy of @H2OAlliance (1/) 1. Federal approval will be required for all major projects on any waterway meeting the new definition

I'm in the mood to acquire new knowledge. Anyone have fun facts to share? Weird theories and hypotheses also welcome.

As motivation, I promise to turn my favourite fact into a meme.

#FridayFacts Come on Twitter, there’s no way @emmaweisbord is the only one who has cool facts to share. How am I supposed to procrastinate otherwise?
