It's impossible to drive in Denver without seeing cars with expired plates

The city's given 16,000 tickets in 2.5 months for expired tags

Now penalties are increasing around the state for expired tags and people with out-of-state plates who've lived in Colorado for a while

🧵
The state DMV estimates 92,000 people a year move to CO but don't register their car here

Now that'll cost you $$$. The new rules:

-Must register car within 90 days of moving to CO and show proof
-Will be responsible for back taxes for late registration
-$25 a month late fine
Penalties will also increase for expired temporary tags

New rules:

-Must register car within 60 days of purchase
-$25 a month late penalty, up to $100
-Drivers will be responsible for back taxes and fees from the date the temporary tags expired

NEW: Douglas County Commissioner suggests seizing land from Denver in retaliation for the city's gun control laws. A 2-1 vote by the Republican commissioners directs the county attorney to study the possibility of seizing 1,000-acre Daniels Park. #copolitics
I'm putting together a report on this for #HeyNext at 6pm and I'll be back to thread details here when I have a moment.
Daniels Park is one of 22 parks in the Denver Mountain Parks system, land long owned by the city in other counties along the Front Range. Daniels Park's 1,000 acres were given to the city between 1920 and 1937. denvergov.org/Government/Age…

You’re right, Roger, one political group in Colorado is overrepresented in the #HeyNext audience. But it’s Unaffiliated voters (50%+ of the Next audience vs 44.8% active voters). #copolitics
Our recent research indicates registered Democrats and Republicans are each underrepresented in the Next audience by about 2-3%. I know that you, as an elected official, base your views on research and evidence as opposed to hunches, so I hope this is interesting and useful info.
And I should note, the political makeup of the show’s audience doesn’t make Next “good” or “bad” just as the fact that it’s the most-watched local newscast doesn’t make it “good” or “bad.” Numbers are just numbers.

🧵A #HeyNext viewer asked a question: What ever happened to the old #GoAvsGo mascot: Howler the Yeti?

And it sent me down a fantastic rabbit hole this afternoon.

Join me....
Howler was the Avs first mascot when the franchise moved to Denver from Quebec City. He's the reason the classic Avalanche sweaters have a foot patch on the shoulder.

Then all of a sudden... around the turn of the century... Howler disappeared...
A few vague articles about Howler over the years have mentioned an incident with a fan in 1999 in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

It took some digging but finally Nexis found me the 1999 AP article about the incident.

Horses are iconic in Colorado. In reality, many older horses are abandoned or sold to slaughterhouses. @COHorseRescue saves horses and finds them loving homes. #HeyNext viewers have raised $40,000 to help. I'll match the next fifty $5 donations here: chr.org/word-of-thanks/
@CoHorseRescue Colorado Horse Rescue's goal is the best outcome for each horse with no judgment for the former owner. Two-thirds of the horses they take in are surrendered, the other one-third are saved from kill buyers at auction.
@CoHorseRescue As Colorado Horse Rescue notes, Coloradans don't euthanize dogs that are too old to hike with their owners, but some horses are discarded because they are no longer rideable. CHR works to find owners willing to take in those companion horses.

Sometimes kids are in pain and there's nothing we can do to help. But when the pain comes from a lack of dental care, we CAN change that. #HeyNext viewers have raised $20,000 and counting this week for @KINDsmiles' work for children across Colorado: classy.org/campaign/kind-…
The non-profit KIND, Kids In Need of Dentistry, offers underserved communities "judgment-free, positive oral health experiences, treatment, and education with kindness, regardless of a patient's ability to pay."
Studies have shown that a lack of dental care causes children to miss school and to perform more poorly when they're there. So it's no exaggeration to say that KIND's work can change the trajectory of a young person's life.

#HeyNext Commentary: We should admit we hold Republican Congresswoman @LaurenBoebert to a different standard than every other elected official in Colorado.
@laurenboebert We hold Congresswoman Boebert to a far lower standard. If we held her to the same standard as every other elected Republican and Democrat in Colorado - we'd be here nearly nightly chronicling the cruel, false, and bigoted things she says for attention and fundraising.
@laurenboebert This is not about politics, if politics is still about things like taxes, national security, health care, jobs, and public lands. This is about us as journalists recognizing that we'll hold a politician accountable if they say something vile once, but not if they do it every day.

Colorado's prison recidivism rate is nearly 50%. With the supportive peer housing of the Second Chance Center, participants' recidivism rate is 10%. #HeyNext viewers have raised $26,000 to support their work. I'll match the next fifty $5 donations here: coloradogives.org/sccwordofthank…
SCC covers participants' rent until they find a job, then surrounds them with peer support and resources to stay sober and overcome mental health challenges. They recently added a staffer to focus on helping participants repair relationships with family, a key to success.
When @scccoloradoorg's participants succeed and avoid reoffending, our whole community wins. Their 10% recidivisim rate proves their approach works. Thank you for supporting this non-profit's work in Colorado through this week's Word of Thanks campaign! coloradogives.org/sccwordofthank…

NEW: By a 3-2 vote, Adams County Commissioners join Douglas County in opting out of the @TCHDHealth public health order mandating masks in schools. #9News #HeyNext
Interesting comment from Eva Henry, chair of the board, responding to Comissioner Emma Pinter’s suggestion that the board support recommendations from the health department it trusted with making this decision…

Henry said by allowing an opt out - @TCHDHealth made it political.
This is fascinating. There’s still public comment where people are urging the board to opt out…even though they already have.

Want to hear something wonderful? #HeyNext viewers have raised $20k in the last hour for @COpetpantry, a statewide non-profit that provides low-income pet owners with free pet food so no pet owner is forced to give up a pet they love. donorbox.org/wordofthanks#i…

Colorado Pet Pantry has seen significant growth - both in need and their ability to meet it - in recent years. They're now operating pet food banks on the Western Slope, too. They distributed 5.1M meals to pets in Colorado last year. ImageImageImage

This is @laurenboebert's campaign manager. BTW, she is all about billionaires/millionaires (including C OGovernor @jaredpolis) "flipping" us into socialism. Now I don't quite get why wealthy capitalists want socialism that would strip them of their wealth. vimeo.com/465195363
God called Bishop to this effort, apparently. She is quite handy with apocalyptic and "end-times" language, as well as a very militant approach to politics. I'm thinking @KyleClark would enjoy this presentation, perhaps for #heynext
"May sure your Sheriff is with you. The Sheriff is the last line of defense." According to #Boebert campaign manager, he is the one who will protect you from a tyrannical gov't. Apparently, because the exercise of state power, including violence and imprisonment, isn't the gov't.

Colorado's San Luis Valley struggles with food insecurity. 1 in 4 residents uses the network of 15 food banks spread across an area the size of Massachusetts. Organizers say they often feel forgotten by the Front Range. So #HeyNext viewers raised $73,782 to fill those food banks. Image
The Food Bank Network of the San Luis Valley is part of the non-profit @LaPuenteHome. They run lean with *one* paid employee. The food bank locations are run by volunteers. As always on Word of Thanks, I'm matching the first 50 $5 donations here: coloradogives.org/9caresSLVFoodB… Image

No kid is ever lunch-shamed in Greeley-Evans District 6. If they don't have lunch money, they're given the same lunch as their classmates. The unpaid student lunch debt in Colorado's 12th largest school district was $147,819. Until #HeyNext viewers got involved this week. Image
The Greeley-Evans school district has decided not to hound families to pay off their lunch debts right now due to the economy and the pandemic. But if the district can't collect, that money will likely have to come out of the general fund. In a high-need district, that's hard. Image
This week, #HeyNext's Word of Thanks microgiving campaign is helping Greeley-Evans schools' foundation @d6success pay off as much lunch debt as possible, so families don't have to worry about it hanging over them year after year. Since Wednesday, viewers have given $50,000+! Image

We said goodbye to the sweetest boy, Porter, a year ago this week. Every beloved pet deserves the vet care he had - so this week’s Word of Thanks microgiving campaign on #HeyNext supports Denver’s low-cost vet clinic where people and pets line up before dawn hoping to be seen. Image
More than 5,000 pets a year receive treatment at @DDFL’s Solutions Veterinary Hospital. People pay what they can. Some bring cards and homemade food if that’s all they can offer. The goal is to prevent pets from being surrendered or euthanized due to their owner’s finances. Image
DDFL operates the low-cost clinic at a loss each year and they estimate they are only able to meet 5% of Denver’s need for low-cost vet care. Would you consider joining me and #HeyNext viewers so they can help more pets? Donate here: nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2… Image

Having just brought our daughter home, I can’t imagine the worry of parents who don’t have a safe crib or carseat for a newborn. Our $5 microgiving project on #HeyNext this week benefits Newborns In Need, which ensures every family leaves Denver Health with what they need. #9News Image
Newborns In Need is a nonprofit project providing each family with a basket of essentials: diapers, wipes, clothes, a book and a stuffed animal (no child should start life without them). And if the family needs more, like a crib or car seat, they provide it.
The director told me about 90% of their families are low income. She said they often see people barely getting by and lately, with the economy, they aren’t making it. This is our chance to pool a bunch of $5 donations and help. As always, I will match the first 50 of them.
