There was so much incredible material that I just couldn't fit into this piece. The most moving were the expressions of support for Sandy I found from women writing in lesbian-feminist newsletters and magazines from the time. #TransHistory #LesbianHistory #TransWomenAreWomen 🧵
There were certainly hostile responses to the Olivia scandal, but there was also pushback against that. In 1978 Lesbian Connection printed ten letters responding to an open letter criticising Olivia for working with a trans woman. Eight of those ten disagreed, siding with Olivia. Some of the letters describe loving personal and romantic relationships between cis and trans lesbians. #LWithTheT #TransWomenAreWomen #TransHistory #LesbianHistory

My mom or one of her relatives from Crete gave me a tiny silver labrys (or pelekys / πέλεκυς). I later learned lesbians claimed the symbol too.

Happy #InternationalLesbianDay!
I don’t remember learning that the pelekys also was the symbol of the fascist Metaxas, as it is an ancient Hellenic (actually — Minoan) symbol.…
The Hellenes also gave the world Sappho, who gave us some of the earliest recorded or preserved love and erotic poetry about women by a woman.

🇬🇷 Welcome to Lesbos, Greece.

👩‍❤️‍👩 The Greek island is inhabited by 115,000 Lesbians, but has also given its name to women loving women worldwide.

🏛️ From the Iliad to the Odyssey, Lesbos has had a central part in Ancient Greek history.

✒️ One of its most famous inhabitants was the 6th century B.C. poet Sappho, whose lyrical poems explored her love of women and their beauty – sometimes even venturing into the erotic. Fresco of Sappho
👩 Sappho was regarded as one of the greatest poets of her time.

📜 Today, not much is known about her life, and much of her work has been lost over the centuries.

👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩 But Sappho's homoerotic writing – and possible personal life – has been discussed since Hellenistic times. Drawing of Sappho

There were a few pre-war novels that treated lesbians as serious characters in relationships with other women, but mostly the topic was handled in circumspect code.

However all that changed in 1950...
