From @AmerAcadPeds - staying safe while Black or minority

To go a step further, we have police in #schools and even #school is unsafe for black #children and children of color

What is the image and coloring of “an angel” or “a cherub”?

Not a Black child. These are powerful images that inform how people view and then treat children

Who is “innocent”?

Ask any advertiser. Images are powerful and change behavior

There is suspension and punishment of Black girls and boys as early as age 3 called “preschool to prison pipeline”

What happens when the place you are supposed to go to grow, develop, expand, play, take risks

...is a place you are seen (and told you are) bad? Criminalized?

Black children with learning disabilities whose needs are not recognized or met, get frustrated in school, are criminalized, even cases of excessive force in restraint that can physically and psychologically harm a child

Add to that, #pediatricians are mandatory reporters on many issues. We know #fostercare has disproportionate number of black & brown children

No it is not “what is wrong with ‘their culture’” as one nurse asked me when I was explaining racial disparities in healthcare

In hospitals there may be an entire research center dedicated to disparities like this

while bedside clinicians at the same institution unaware, biased & think citing that research from the same institution is “political” if incorporated on rounds

Right questions: What is wrong with a system that selectively destroys some families because of cultural chauvinism and wrong assumptions?
If I am part of that system, then how am *I* party to harm?

When I cannot be sure I do more good than harm, I have left jobs and systems

#BlackintheIvory is full of stories of #AcademicTwitter #MedTwitter #MedEd of #blackexcellence not only denied but punished, criminalized

starts in cradle & school

then #academia @PASMeeting

Never recognized as expert in own work, always at margins

So why bang head against a wall in spaces silenced, unvalued, &, if #BlackintheIvory, even potentially criminalized?

After a half career of experiencing gender pay gap, am pursuing world’s most expensive MBA

Why? Be in the room & be “self” w/ people who control 💰for results

That’s how world works - there are clubs & various ways to acquire “membership”

(I learned service at front lines or peer reviewed pubs not the way 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Sometimes the “club” where power brokers meet is a literal strip club

Let’s change that

Sometimes WOC get more respect from #quality & #innovation minded business leaders like @Ackermanjay who has vision & puts 💰💰💰 behind equity & #SDOH. Here, agreed with my suggestion to interview #blackqueen @fstanfordmd of @harvardmed & @MGHMedicine

#SoMe & #Medatwitter should be space where women & minorities can thrive & be expressive, as compared to the Carly Fiorina strip club example of gated sexist access

Thought provoking piece in @Forbes on cultural chauvinism to policing of expression
