/This is my daughter, Molly. She's five years old. She was excited for her space shirt. Later, she was looking in the mirror and asked me if she looked like a boy wearing a skirt. I told her no and asked her why she thought that.
/She told me it was because she was wearing a boy shirt. (She was, by the way.) I asked her what made her think it was a boy's shirt. She told me it was because it had space on it.
/Now, this girl LOVES space and anything to do with space. She has wanted to be an astronaut since she was about 3 years old. She studies space and soaks it all up.
/I asked her why it having space on it made it a boy's shirt. Her response? "Because Walmart and Target only have space shirts in the boy's section! We have to buy my space shirts in the boy's section!"
/I sat down with her and had a talk with her about how girls can do amazing things. How girls have been astronauts and gone into space. How girls have discovered things in space and how girls work on the rockets that take the astronauts into space.
/And, if she wanted to do that too, she could. And it didn't matter if we had to buy shirts in the "boy" section, if she liked the shirt, that was just fine with me and I didn't care what Walmart and Target labeled it as.
/I'm so frustrated that my 5 year old has noticed the lack of space shirts in the girls section. I live in fear of the day somebody will tell her she can't be an astronaut because she is a girl.
/So, I'm asking for help. Show me that girls can do great and incredibly things. This is the first time's been concerned about the lack of space in girls clothes and I want to show her that girls can do anything!
