We spend lots of time describing what is happening in systems (and devising ways to manipulate them) but far less time trying to understand what systems *are doing* and why

I had a gentle insinuation of "neurosexism" from a questioner after a talk I gave last week, due to chapter on sex differences in #INNATE. For the record, here's what I think about such differences:
I don't think recognising that sex differences in behaviour exist in humans, as in other mammals, for good evolutionary reasons, is sexist. I think it's important if we want to understand many central aspects of human nature.
I certainly DO think it's sexist to take such differences as evidence that one sex is superior to the other. And it's definitely sexist to apply group average differences to derive expectations of individuals, which is the very definition of prejudice.

Super non-critical write-up of an extremely unconvincing study, both contributing to misinformation on causes of autism: Autism and DDT: What one million pregnancies can — and can’t — reveal nature.com/articles/d4158…
On the headline alone: it wasn't an analysis of a million pregnancies - it was a search through a million pregnancies to find 778 with autism, which were compared to "matched" 778 without. So, what is presented as a huge sample was actually TINY!
Both the primary article and the write-up by @NatureNews state that exposure to high levels of DDT increased risk of autism by 32%! That sounds enormous! Of course, it's a *relative* increase - from about 1% to about 1.32% - also TINY

Something I hear a LOT from people who tell me they have cognitive disabilities of some kind is that the thread essay format is so much more accessible for them, and I think there's real power there.
Threads don't necessarily have to be short to be accessible, a lot of mine aren't at all, but the way the information is broken up into these chunks really does make it so much more, I don't know, graspable for some people who might have barriers to traditional essays
I'm usually asking people to read multiple threads to understand what I'm talking about too. Folks are reading, through all of them, like a whole essay's worth of writing. But the format is the key here.

Something I see every day that is rarely discussed: founders/former founders/experienced founders helping new founders when they have no economic incentive to do so. This is part of the culture that makes the startup world work.
The image/prestige of the startup world has taken some big hits in the last couple years and it's not inclusive as it should be. But by and large the startup community is one of the most helpful, most sharing, and most selfless communities you could ever belong to.
I think this has something to do with how rare success is and how humble most successful founders are. Every successful founder knows that their victory had a lot to do with luck.

Many Iranians criticised one of BBC Farsi’s journalists for her comments on Iran-Hezbullah relations. Some have even threatened her that she won’t be allowed to go back to Iran after the fall of the regime. Many Iranians believe some of @bbcpersian journalists support the regime.
In the past few days some anti-BBC slogans have been chanted by the protesters in Iran. In a comment one of BBCFarsi journalist claims that ‘Trump wants to turn Iran into another Syria by starting a civil war etc’. The same propaganda which is pumped out by Iranian state media.
Some of @BBCPersian journalists block anyone who criticises them. One of its journalists in particular has publicly supported A.Khamenei on his social media pages. I have written to a few MPs and the BBC about. Will see if BBC is interested in opening an investigation.

I've read several threads by black women about their experiences mirroring those of the woman with Ansari. They are gripping, brave, painful. They evoke the fear of reprisal & how sexual agency shifts.
I am not RTing because I don't want to encourage trolling.
But I thank them.
The fact is millions of women have had this experience precisely because we DO exert power over our own sexual agency. But that power ceases when the man chooses to ignore consent being withdrawn. The facile "just leave" narrative white women are pushing we've heard before.
For generations women have been told there's a point where they are no longer allowed to withdraw consent.
That narrative must end. For women to have true sexual agency and choice, men must assent to follow the rules and not impose their own or the threat of violence.
